Bundle of Holding: They Came from Beneath the Sea

There’s something to be said for the tone and aesthetic of the classic B movie. It’s campy, silly, and tonally scattered. They’re imaginative and can take risks where big blockbuster released cannot afford to.

They Came from Beneath the Sea is Onyx Path’s B movie-themed roleplaying game, designed by Matthew Dawkins, also known as The Gentleman Gamer. I played a game of They Came from Beneath the Sea at Tabletop Scotland a few years back. Dawkins ran the game and we had an absolute riot. We played a game of horror and mystery in a beachside town. I played an incompetent local cop unhappy with all the ‘reefer madness’ that had overtaken the town.

I enjoyed the game so much that I went and bought a copy quickly thereafter. Now, Bundle of Holding is offering up the game and a load of additional content for a discounted price. This is a single tier bundle that costs $12.95 and gets you the following items:

Obviously, the core book is the star of the show. It weighs in at 333 pages and contains everything you need to play the game. Except for dice, obviously. And friends! You need those, too. What I really like is that this is not a game that is set in the world of B movies, but in the actual movies. This means that movie-related effects take place. Want to skip ahead to the resolution of an element of your story? Inset a deleted scened. Want some well-timed destruction? Have a production light fall onto an enemy. It’s so cool!

You’ve then got a bunch of additional content. Monsters of the Deep is a bestiary full of new creatures that can be played for farce or for horror. Heroic Land Dwellers gives a bunch of stock characters, complete with stats, backgrounds, and quips. Armed with some new creatures and characters, Tales of Aquatic Terror then gives you a bunch of adventures to embark upon with your group.

I’d say that this bundle represents pretty good value. The game is fun, and uses a system that should be quite familiar to players of World of Darkness and Chronicles of Darkness. Onyx Path consistently puts out good stuff, and I’m a big fan of Matthew Dawkins. I loved playing this game, and heartily recommend this bundle!
