Game of the Month, June 2024: Age of Sigmar, Third Edition

I really loved the second edition of Age of Sigmar. I enjoyed first edition (after the GHB was introduced and it became an actual game), but it was second edition that I fell in love with. I did feel that third edition came around a bit too quickly, especially since a sizeable chunk of second edition was spent in lockdown, with most of us unable to actually play the game with other human people.

But any doubts I might have had were quickly quashed with a truly fantastic edition of the game. Third edition AoS represents the most fun I’ve had with a miniatures game. As such, in the lead-up to the imminent launch of fourth edition, Age of Sigmar is our game of the month for June, and this post will take the form of a love letter to that game…

Dear Age of Sigmar Third Edition,

From the realms of Azyr to the shadowed lands of Shyish, you’ve woven tales of heroism, treachery, and cosmic struggle. As the sun sets on your third edition, let me pour my thoughts onto parchment, inked with the passion of a thousand bottles of Nuln Oil.

The Core Rules: A Symphony of Blades and Sigils

Your core rules, like the forging of a celestial blade, blend elegance and depth. They beckon both seasoned generals and fledgling champions. I’ve traced their lines—the command points, the battle tactics, the terrain rules—all harmonizing in a dance of destiny… okay, maybe not the terrain rules!

Dominion: A Gift of Celestial Fire

Dominion, your gift to us, arrived like a twin-tailed comet blazing across the night sky. Stormcast Eternals and Orruk Gutrippaz clashed upon the fields of battle. The Vindictors, clad in golden armor, their swinging spears singing solemn hymns of justice. The Kruleboyz, green-skinned and crafty, their weapons dipped in vile poisons. And Kragnos, the God of Destruction, a colossus striding through legend, dominating the lands of Ghur.

The Art and Lore: Painted Dreams and Forgotten Oaths

Your art, Age of Sigmar, transcends mere pigment and canvas. It breathes life into the Mortal Realms—the ethereal glow of Hysh, the twisted spires of Ulgu, the blood-soaked sands of Ghur. And the stories! Oh, the sagas spun by scribes and bards—the rise of the God-King Sigmar, the plottings of Nagash, the tragic ballad of Neferata.

Community and Camaraderie: Dice Rolled, Pints Raised

In dimly lit gaming halls, we gathered. Dice tumbled, fate wove its threads, and friendships bloomed. We debated lore, swapped painting tips, and reveled in victories and defeats. The hobby movement swept across continents, brushes dipped in passion. And when the realms trembled, we stood united, bound by shared battles and shared dreams.

Farewell, Third Edition: A Portal Closes, but Legends Endure

As the Realmsgate creaks shut, sealing this chapter, know this: Your legacy echoes across our hearts. Generations yet unborn will hear tales of Dominion, of heroes and villains, of realms aflame and skies weeping. We raise our brushes, our dice, our voices, and salute you, Age of Sigmar, Third Edition.

May your stars burn bright, your realms flourish, and your memory endure.

With love and reverence.

Roll on, fourth edition!
