Humble Bundle: Runequest

In 1978, a groundbreaking role-playing game called RuneQuest burst onto the scene. Designed by Steve Perrin, Ray Turney, Steve Henderson, and Warren James, it introduced innovations that would shape RPG design for years to come. Notably, RuneQuest was the first skill-based RPG, emphasising character abilities and skills over traditional classes.

The game’s setting was equally captivating. It immersed players in Glorantha, a mythical world crafted by Greg Stafford. Glorantha had previously appeared in board games like White Bear & Red Moon, Nomad Gods, and Dragon Pass, all published by Chaosium. In 1978, Chaosium released the first edition of RuneQuest, set within this richly detailed world. A second edition followed in 1979, refining the rules and expanding Glorantha’s lore.

RuneQuest quickly gained popularity, becoming the second most beloved fantasy RPG after Dungeons & Dragons. Over the years, it changed hands between various publishers, including Avalon Hill and Mongoose Publishing. However, in recent years, it found its way back home to Chaosium, where it continues to thrive as RuneQuest: Roleplaying in Glorantha.

Today, I’m sharing a Humble Bundle featuring that newest, current edition of the game. Costing just £14.21, the bundle includes 18 items:

Runequest is not a game that I know a whole lot about, but it’s certainly got a proud pedigree. It’s also one that is spoken of very highly in a couple of the RPG-centric Discords that I frequent.

The bundle contains the highly-regarded starter set, along with the core rules. The core books are the rulebook and the bestiary, along with the GM screen. This is all you really need to play the game, though the bundle contains a lot more content that can be used in your games and campaigns.

I note there are a few Cults of Runequest books in here. These books have been really successful and positively received, almost being seen as something of another renaissance for the game. They’re also very recent, so you’re getting a good range of content that is very up-to-date.

For the excellent price listed, I’ll be picking up this bundle. Runequest has long been a game that I have been interested in, and this seems a pretty excellent time to take the plunge and really delve in with not only the core rules but a whole bunch of additional books. This bundle represents fantastic value for money.

  1. I played RuneQuest at a Tournament in 1994 (with my gaming group winning first place – still have the trophy). We all loved the way it went, and I promptly bought the rulebook (prob 3rd Edn) the same day. We never really ended up playing it after the tournament and I eventually sold the book. Like most of these things, I’d now like to give it another go. The Humble Bundle & 6th Edn might be a good way to get in on this, though I will still need an actual paper copy to be happy.

      1. Bought the 9 item bundle today. I’m looking forward to reading through it all. If I’m enjoying it, I might order the physical core rulebook next month. Thanks for bringing me back to RQ after 30 years!
