5 on Friday 06/09/24

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases a battalion box for Warriors of Chaos for The Old World – The forces of Chaos are the omnipresent threat in the worlds of Warhammer. It’s great to see these iconic warriors stride into The Old World:

You know, as much as these are slightly older models than the current AoS minis, the newer sculpts are largely just slight evolutions of these classics. This might be a great value set for folk looking to start out in Age of Sigmar (1320 points in AoS), as much as it is for those interested in The Old World.

Son of Oak Game Studio releases Metro: Otherscape, based on their City of Mist system –  City of Mist is a game that I keep looking at. It’s one of these titles that’s always of interest to me, but is never quite top of my list. Now, Son of Oak have put out a new variant in the form of Otherscape:

Otherscape is based on City of Mist, but is all about blending fantasy and cyberpunk elements in a way that really appeals to me. I’ve not yet jumped into City of Mist; could this be what I grab instead?

Wizards of the Coast taking preorders for Duskmourn Commander decks for Magic: The Gathering – I’m falling down the rabbit hole pretty badly. MtG is a lot of fun for me right now, and I’m having a blast with Commander as a format. Had some great games of it just last night! The newest set is just about to hit, too:

Coming out of the cutesy woodland themes of Bloomburrow, we’re heading right into horror with Duskmourn. I’m not completely sold on the theming, but I’m hoping that decks will be interesting. The one that appeals to me is probably the miracle-themed one.

Lord of Endless Fear supplement for Vampire: The Masquerade released on Storytellers Vault – The current edition of Vampire: the Masquerade firmly focuses on younger vampires. I don’t think that’s a bad thing. The elder kindred are inhuman and unknowable creatures; near-humanity makes for more relatable storytelling. That said; there’s still a place for elders in the story, and that’s what Lords of Endless Fear offers:

The book has a bunch of example characters, along with rules to adapt your own characters to better represent the elders. There’s content on the idea Gehenna, which has been around for many editions, and the Beckoning, which has taken so many of the elders out of the current events of the World of Darkness. As usual, there are some loresheets, too. I love loresheets.

Renegade Game Studios are currently taking preorders for Axis & Allies: Anniversary Edition – Whilst it’s not really a game that’s ever massively appealed to me, Axis & Allies is a classic. Now, to celebrate 40 years of the game, Renegade Game Studios is putting out an anniversary edition:

This is a deluxe edition with input from the original designer, Larry Harris. It’s got a big, new board. It’s got new units. It’s got Italy. For what more could one ask, friendo?

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Old World: Narrative Event 1st & 2nd March 2025 @ Woehammer Another event held by the fine folks at Woehammer! Peter and the others have done such a great job building up the blog and branching out into new games and events. Support them!

‘Avin a good time: The Ogor-Ale Drinking Contest @ Spent Glory Fans of Warhammer Underworlds should hop on over to Spent Glory to take part in the vote. What are your favourites in each weight category? Go, and make your voice heard.

Lumineth Spearhead for.. spearhead? @ Good Enough Hobbies You know, I really like Spearhead. It just works. It’s a really good format that actually seems to have been thought through, rather than just included as a tokenistic, low-level format. These minis look great, too. I’m not the biggest fan of the Lumineth, but these are clean and neat, and the blue is very striking.

Spearhead: Slaves to Darkness @ A Tabletop Gamer’s Diary More Spearhead! These Nurgle-themed warriors look fantastic. I’m constantly amazed at how much this blogger manages to paint, and the consistent quality of the minis. Great stuff.

The Nightsoil Guild @ Rodrigos the Spiral City Yet more creative additions to the Spiral City. I continue to love these models, and Nightsoil Guard do not disappoint. I especially love their doggo!
