5 on Friday 04/10/24

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop a Chaos Dwarf team for Blood Bowl – GW continues to put out fantastic looking teams for Blood Bowl. These miniatures are a clear evolution of the classic Chaos Dwarf look; big hats and all!

I also really like the sneaky Hobgoblin lads. The whole team is just excellent; it’s just a pity that there are no Bull Centaurs in there. I see there’s a names Bull Centaur star player in the store, but not generic ones as yet. Maybe they’ll be coming soon.

Green Ronin releases Cthulhu supplement for Fantasy AGE –  I can’t claim that the AGE system is one of my favourites, but I did enjoy some games of Dragon Age in the past. Given my recent enjoyment of Call of Cthulhu, the mythos-themed Fantasy AGE supplement jumped out at me:

I like when the Cthulhu mythos gets incorporated into fantasy and/or sci-fi settings, and Green Ronin do produce consistently good books for their various games.

Atomic Mass Games releases the Good Soldiers Follow Orders Squad Pack for Shatterpoint – I’d previously looked at some Bad Batch minis for both Shatterpoint and Legion. Today, we’re giving our Bad Batchers some antagonists in the form of Crosshair and his lads:

I never got that far into the show. I need to go back to it. I was enjoying it, but I just got distracted by other things, including a recent push to reduce my screentime a little. I keep hearing good things about the show, and seeing stuff like this always whets the appetite.

Catalyst releases Smooth Operations sourcebook for Shadowrun – I was collecting Shadowrun 6th edition, for all its flaws, for quite a while. I got fed up, though. A lot of books were coming out, and it just didn’t look like I’d really be playing it. If I did get to play, would I try to catch up? Probably not, but I’d probably grab targeted books. This would likely be one:

The party’s face is the fast-talking, persuasive (or deceptive) front man of the group. This is the book that’s all about this most social of roles. It will expand rules around this role, give ideas of how to use a party’s face, and it will be full of all sorts of excellent artwork.

Corvus Belli releases JSA Pack Alpha for Infinity – oooooh, Infinity… I’ve picked up a fair few Infinity miniatures over the years, but I just find myself utterly intimidated by the minis, and I won’t get them to the table. Still, releases like this are so temptingly gorgeous:

The Japanese Sectorial Army is really cool, and I love how they were separated out from Yu Jing in recent years. Their heavy suits are especially awesome. I should get some Infinity painted up… I just worry that I won’t be doing them anything approaching justice.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

The Love/Hate Relationship: Controversial Historical Game Topics @ The Players’ Aid This is a really fascinating discussion. It’s certainly something I’ve thought about a fair bit, largely due to games like A Distant Plain and Labyrinth: War on Terror. I enjoyed this post a lot.

Send in the Doughboys @ Space-Biff Necromolds is one of those few Kickstarters that I kick myself for missing out on. I love how the game works. I love the way you build your little army, pressing them out of plasticine or putty. This is such a cool concept.

The Plaguepack @ A Tabletop Gamer’s Diary I love these miniatures! I really enjoyed painting my own set. I like that they’ve gotten a good place in the new book. This post has a really nicely painted set.

Simple Schemes: Squig Hoppers @ Woehammer Another of these fun. little guides from the folks over at Woehammer. It’d be nice to see this become a regular part of their rotation. Fantastic unit, too!

So It’s Come to This: Destruction Tier List, October 2024 @ Plastic Craic a good rundown of where the bestest grand alliance in all of the Mortal Realms is sitting at the moment. Some good observations and some good list tech. Fun post..
