5 on Friday 17/01/25

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases Ravaged Coast supplement for Age of Sigmar’s Path to Glory – Path to Glory is the narrative campaign system for Warhammer: Age of Sigmar. The launch of the latest edition focused really heavily on the Spearhead variant, so it’s good to see Games Workshop now circling back around to develop and promote the Path to Glory system again:

I’m excited to see the Path to Glory Battlepack. It looks a lot of fun, particularly the Regiments of Renown and the spell lores. I don’t forsee us really doing a Path to Glory campaign at our local club, but I do still like the idea of this format, and love to see it supported. And who knows, I might see if I can get a small group together to put together a path to glory.

Oddity Press releases their cinematic fantasy RPG, Grimwild – Whilst it was the art of Per Janke that initially caught my attention, the underlying book and game has certainly caught my imagination

Promising a low-prep, high-drama style, Grimwild sounds like a lot of fun. I like the idea of any game the involves collaborative worldbuilding; I think it’s such a great approach.

Wizards of the Coast to release Innistrad Remastered set for Magic: The Gathering – It barely feels like we’ve gotten into Foundations, especially when the starter collection just immediately sold out, but we’re already gearing up for another new set at the end of January. This one is a return to the classic Innistrad setting.

Heck, they’ve already revealed sets beyond this one, so that pace is not slowing down at all. Still, I do love gothic horror, so this set is very interesting to me. It does follow on quite quickly from Duskmourn, another horror set, but the vibe is very different, I suppose. Maybe it’ll bring down the price of Edgar Markov?

Slightly Reckless Games releases their Ronin RPG – A samurai-inspired Mork Borg conversion in a world of eternal eclipse? Hell, yeah! Count me in!

A distinct setting, new classes, new rules, cool monsters (yokai), and that visual style that jives with Mork Borg’s punk aesthetic all make for a damn compelling product. I wants this!

Black Engine Studios releases Cowborg – I am all in favour of discovering new Mork Borg conversions. So, following on from Ronin, here’s another of them! This time, we’re looking at an apocalyptic western with cowboys and whatnot:

I think Malifaux has proven to me that horror, anguish, hopelessness, and the occult go very well with cowboy hats and the imagery of the frontier. I also love the punk aesthetic of Mork Borg. This is a very interesting prospect, this game.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Daily Commander: Marina Vendrell @ J.M. Casual Blog I’ve been tentatively looking for a 5-colour commander. I’ve looked at a few options, including Kenrith, and some Superfriends options. Given my love for Enchantments as a card type, Marina actually looks pretty plausible as an option. I just worry a little that I don’t have the manabase for her, and this may be my main obstacle. Triomes, yo!

First Impressions: Purple Haze from PHALANX @ The Players’ Aid I’ve never played anything from PHALANX, but they do seem to produce a lot of really cool wargames. I also really like when tactical games manage to also carry theme, which it sounds like they do well in this offering.

Top Three AoS Lists for 2D6 OsloHammer #9 X-Mas!s @ Woehammer Some fun lists in here! I’m not far off what I’d need to run the Orruks. I love the idea of the stampede in the Ogors. The Patreon-only Skaven list also looks fun. Yeah, a lovely wee set of lists.

How I Prepare and Run My Weekly D&D Session @ Kipi’s Corner It’s always cool to read about different peoples’ processes. I love seeing what folk are up to and finding little tips to improve my own prep and play. Thanks for sharing!

Codex Astra Militarum Review and Death Korps Army Set Unboxing – Warhammer 40k @ Sprues & Brews Got some local peeps who are very excited for this boxed set. It’s great to see the fan-favourites of the Death Korps getting a great treatment here. The new book looks fun, too.
