Magic Monday: Magic is About the Gathering

For many of us, Tabletop gaming isn’t really about the games. Oh, the games are fun, but they’re social scaffolds. They’re a shared social experience. I suppose that’s why solo games leave a bit cold. With this consideration in mind, Magic: The Gathering is more than just a card game. It’s a gateway to new friendships, unforgettable moments, and endless creativity. My local club has really enriched my life, and the big focus on Magic during recent months has been really nice.

One of my earliest memories with tabletop gaming was playing with a group of friends after school. We would gather around the kitchen table, each bringing our own games and snacks to share. It wasn’t just about the game; it was about the laughter, the stories, and the camaraderie. Those afternoons became a cherished tradition, and some of my closest friendships were forged over those shared experiences. This was also back before video gaming was online, and the same shared experience happened around the SNES.

As I mentioned, recent months have seen a big uptake of Commander at our local club. It’s been nice. The big thing has been that things have been a bit more focused and more people have been doing the same thing. We are a group with quite diverse interests, and a lot of games get played at the club, but it’s been cool to have us all so focused and playing each other in different combinations. Of course, I’m keen that the club does not become just Magic, but we’ve had a good time.

The club Discord has been alive with pings of people sharing cards, arranging trades and games, talking about deck ideas, and looking forward to game night. There’s been so much positivity around the game, and we also have an upcoming event this weekend.

And this is what it’s all about. There’s a place for competitiveness and taking games seriously; of course there is. I’ve gone to tournaments. I’ve tried my best to win! I like winning. But the purpose of these things? Connection.

We sit at the table with our friends because we need and want human contact. We socialise. We laugh. We connect. Without this, what are we doing? Amassing bits of cardboard? Okay.

I’m loving Magic. I’m loving Commander. I love tabletop gaming, more widely. Ultimately, though, it has to be said; Magic is nothing without the Gathering.
