5 on Friday 31/01/25

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases Codex: Aeldari for Warhammer 40,000 – The Eldar was my first Warhammer army. I remember picking up some Guardians and a Farseer as my first minis and painting them up as Ulthwe. Really, that meant caking them in black paint and then struggling to paint yellow helmets over this dark base. It’s not an army I’ve revisited, but it’s still one in which I am interested. Now, Games Workshop is releasing the latest edition of their codex:

The new book looks pretty strong, and there are some cool units and new rules. There are also a lot of detachments. The Harlequins seem a bit of an afterthought in this book, but I suppose it makes them more usable than they were, previously. As always, my eye drifts to the Wraith units… temptation that way lies!

Z-Man releases Lovecraft Letter – Love Letter is a fun, light game. We took a look at it a few months back. It’s a game that, for a while, was really getting the shovelware treatment, with reskin after reskin being released. The latest of these offerings is this lovely Lovecraftian edition:

One of the curious side-effects of Asmodee owning everything is that you do get a bit of cross-pollination of brands. Arkham Horror was always a Fantasy Flight Games brand, whilst Love Letter has been published by Z-Man Games since 2018. It’s easy to reskin one company’s game to another company’s property when you own both companies, I guess.

Wizards of the Coast to release Aetherdrift set for Magic: The Gathering – We’ve had birds in Wingspan, and we’ve had dragons in Wyrmspan. Now, we’re getting fish. Welcome to Finspan:

The series has been pretty well-received, and Stonemaier did make some cool tweaks and changes when they moved from Wingspan to Wyrmspan. I’m keen to see what they do to further differentiate Finspan.

USA-Opoly to release new board game, Tea Witches – Honestly, it was the beautiful, whimsical cover of this game that grabbed my attention:

I can’t claim to know much about this game, but I enjoy a good cup of tea and I appreciate a good witch! It’s all about growing your little tea company, which is a cute theme. I also like that The Op is actually putting out original titles, rather than just reskinned shovelware. Let’s reward good behaviour!

Azul Duel currently up for preorder – Another week, another 2-player version of a popular board game! This time, we’re looking at a 2-player edition of Azul:

I’ve still never played Azul, although I am told I would like it. I like drafting, tile placement, set collection… yeah, maybe the 2-player version would be a good one to play at home with my wife?

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Marvel Crisis Protocol tournament report: Jumping Into January 18Jan2025 @ The Bovine Overlord Another great MCP writeup with lots of lovely pictures. Sounds like a really fun event! I think I’d really enjoy the squad-building aspect of this game.

Daily Commander: Plargg and Nassari @ J.M. Casual Blog I love Plargg and Nassari! They are an important piece of my Obeka deck. I don’t know that I’d necessarily look to use them as a commander, but it’s cool to explore to concept.

Codex Aeldari Review and Aeldari Unboxing – Warhammer 40k 10th Edition @ Sprues & Brews Another solid review from Sprues & Brews. It’s certainly not helping me maintain my resistance to building a wraith army…

A Break Is As Good As a Rest, or Something @ Burn After Running This post grabbed my attention with a Jocky Wilson reference. More tabletop gaming blogs should regerence Jocky Wilson. The rest of the post, in which the author reflects on what they want from their hobby, is also very good, but does suffer from a lack of more darts references.

Joel McGrath’s 5-0 Sons of Behemat: Best Overall at Cancon 2025 @ Plastic Craic Stompy boys are best boys. I love my Gargants, even if some people try to shame me for it! Of course, they quickly realise that the army isn’t actually as hard-hitting as they might think. It’s great to see folk finding success with them, too!

There have been a few posts since my last 5 on Friday:

I did buy some minis, but I’ll work out that stuff for my end of month post.

Catch you next week!

  1. Thanks for the shout out! I think that you would love MCP, and I’d definitely love to read your thoughts on it after a few games. The Scotland event scene is pretty vibrant too, so if you could live with a bit of travel there are always games to be had.
