5 on Friday 28/02/25

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Black Library releases an omnibus of Gotrek & Maleneth stories – When it comes to novels set in both The Old World and the Mortal Realms, Gotrek is the iconic character. He’s beloved, and has a rich, developed background. This latest omnibus collects several of his stories, alongside his aelven companion, Maleneth:

There’s a lot in here! The omnibus contains three novels, a novella, and four short stories. Here’s the full list:

– The Bone Desert (Novella) by Robbie MacNiven
– The Neverspike (Short story) by Darius Hinks
– Ghoulslayer (Novel) by Darius Hinks
– Gitslayer (Novel) by Darius Hinks
– Death on the Road to Svardheim (Short story) by Darius Hinks
– Soulslayer (Novel) by Darius Hinks
– The Crown of Karak-Khazhar (Short story) by Darius Hinks
– The Dead Hours (Short story) by David Guymer

Definitely a great value prospect for anyone looking to read more Gotrek stories!

Gamelyn Games to release Tiny Epic Game of Thrones – I didn’t know Gamelyn Games produced licensed editions of their Tiny Epic games. Looking back, I do see that Gamelyn has done a The Last Kingdom-themed game, but that wasn’t a Tiny Epic. I dunno, but this one is based on Game of Thrones:

Grand, sweeping war over Westeros? Political Intrigue? Nice art? This is a very nice little package. I don’t think it would necessarily be the first Tiny Epic I’d pick up, but it looks great. I do need to try one at some point…

GMT Games releases a second printing of Comancheria: The Rise and Fall of the Comanche Empire – Much like their political game, Mr. President: The American Presidency, 2001-2020, Comancheria really tempts to make a rare venture into solo gaming. That’s not usually my thing at all, but this game just looks so cool, and it explores part of history that I just don’t know that well.

The game puts the player in the shoes of the Numunuu, the Comanche people, and tells the story of the First Nations people of North America. You must conquer and control the southern plains, whilst fighting off the northern tribes, the United States, New Mexico, and Mexico and its colony, Texas. There’s a lot to juggle, and you are heavily outnumbered.

Preorders begin for MTG Final Fantasy booster packs – As I mentioned earlier this week, Final Fantasy’s Magic set is on the way! It does strike me as slightly odd that this is going ahead whilst there is an ongoing Final Fantasy card game, but whatever. The boosters are up for early preorder.

As usual, there will be Play Boosters and Collector Boosters, along with the previously-revealed Commander decks. This looks to be a big, full set. I’m really keen to see what we get once everything has been revealed.

Magpie Games releases a second edition of their RPG, Urban Shadows – Urban Shadows 2nd edition was on Kickstarter back in 2020. It’s just been released to DriveThruRPG. It’s another game based on the wonderful PBTA system, and it looks like a lot of fun. From the description, it feels like a modern, streamlined, simple World of Darkness. This is a huge selling point for me.

This is the second edition of an already successful and well-received game. As such, this should hopefully be a pretty polished product; a refinement of an already-good game.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Mantic Games Mars Attacks Novas Vira Infantry (I think?) + Zombicide Stat Cards @ Azazel’s Bitz Box Some nicely painted miniatures, as we’d expect from Azazel. The fun bit of this post is the creation of the cards. Custom pics with custom stats! That’s really personalising the game!

Dealing With the Hobby Mojo Blues and Getting Back into Things @ Woehammer My painting slump for the past half year or so has been largely down to pain, but even as that has subsided slightly of late, I’ve struggled to get back into the swing of things. Part of it, I’m sure, is down to nerves, and a hesitation at the idea of getting my hopes up. Some of it, though, is just a slump. This post has some really good tips to try to deal with that aspect.

Conclave: The Board Game @ Space-Biff A fun review of an interesting-if-flawed game. Worryingly topical as well, given the concerns raised this week about the Pope’s ailing health…

Deadzone 3.0 Terrain @ Sho3box I have some of this terrain sitting, built but unpainted, and it looks boring as hell. This post actually makes it look really cool. Maybe I should give it a chance. Great job!

Boardgame Briefs: Splendor @ The Kind GM A good review of Splendor, which is a game I like. It’s never quite been a big game for me, as I prefer the similar (but simpler) Century. I know Splendor has more going on, though. I feel this review is pretty fair.

There have been a few posts since my last 5 on Friday:

Now, let’s return to counting progress on painting in these posts. I’ve decided not to include the big pile of Ironjawz I’ve grabbed. I bought them to be painted by someone else, so I don’t really consider them normal purchases, and I don’t intend to take credit for the painting. What I have purchased and will count, is the recent Gitz box:

So that’s 9 miniatures against the one terrain piece that I completed this week.

Purchased: 9
Painted: 1

Catch you next week!
