Creator Spotlight: Goon Master Games

Goon Master Games produces fantasy miniature STLS. These are usually anthropomorphic critterfolk and assorted accessories and basing materials. They largely operate via Patreon and MMF. They are a creator that I have been following for some time, and I’ve printed a fair number of their miniatures over the past couple of months.

I’ve been pretty happy with the quality of the STLs, and have printed a number of different sculpts from a few different sets to put together a couple of Burrows & Badgers crews. Here are the two crews I have printed, built, and painted:

I love the consistent style that Goon Master uses for their sculpts, which makes it easy to mix and match miniatures from different sets into a coherent warband. I think maybe they’d benefit from me adjusting the scale a little when dealing with crews consisting of a range of different animals, but that’s a minor worry.

Here are a few sets that I really like:

I love those rabbits, and have printed a couple of them myself. The hedgehogs are really cool as well, as are those undead birdies! Everything looks great, really. Goon Master is definitely consistent in the best way.

Each monthly release has a bunch of new critterfolk, some bases, basing materials, and often a scenic base or diorama. Looking at each set, there’s a good range of poses, but I must admit to being a little disappointed in one area. Internal variety. Yes, there are a bunch of different beavers in one of those sets that I pictured above, and there’s a cool range of different poses. But let’s take a closer look. It’s mostly the same equipment, same armour, same features… just reposed. That’s a little annoying, as they do start to look less like a collection of critterfolk, and more like the same character in several different poses. A little more variation would go a long way to making these already excellent sets even better.

In terms of usability, these STLs are mostly single-part miniatures, and the presupports are excellent. Over a few very full build plates, I never had a single misprint. That’s pretty damn good, and I’m delighted with how they came out. There was one sculpt where I found the supports a little intrusive and hard to clean up, and that was the torch-bearing hedgehog. It’s a great pose, and I actually loved it so much that I used it twice, but it was a pain to clean up, and it did feel a little rougher as I was painting it. This can have a bit of an unfortunate impact if, like me, you rely heavily on contrast or speed paints, or similar ranges.

It should be obvious from my effusive positivity about these sculpts that I definitely recommend Goon Master Games. I love their aesthetic, consistency, usability, presupports, and overall polish. I have already painted 20 of their miniatures and am definitely going to be doing more in the future. Chicken Knights will be a thing!
