Now, let’s take a look at what sort of progress was made in January.
January Roundup: Painting
After a few months of not getting much done, I managed to paint up a whole bunch of stuff this month for RPGs and skirmish games. First up, we’ve a trio of miniatures for an RPG I’m currently running with some kids:

I’m pretty happy with how these turned out, and I followed them up with another pair of minis for the same campaign:

I then moved on to grab another miniature that had been sitting half-finished for some time. It’s another Flesh-Eater Courts character:

I then moved on to my main project for the month, which was preparing a bunch of miniatures for some cyberpunk-themed skirmish games. First up, Police Squad:

Having finished up this group, I then turned to the big pile of quite random miniatures that I’d had sitting for some time. These were shared over a series of posts:
Here’s everything you’d find in those posts:

The goal here was not to have a coherent warband, but instead to have a range of miniatures that players can draft into their own crews. Between the five cyberpunk posts, I completed 26 cyberpunk minis, which is enough to consider this pretty usable now. I’ll likely add to it in future, but happy to move on for now!
Here are the totals for the end of the month:
- Purchased: 0
- Painted: 32
Not a bad start! I’m currently working on a few things, including some Trench Crusade minis and a Kruleboyz monster. I’m also looking to rebase some older models that I have.
January Roundup: Gaming
With Commander and Lorcana featuring more heavily in my rotation at the moment, and a goal to get more miniature games played, I reduced this year’s target to 30 games. This month, I’ve added just one game to the list:
Between the timings of the holidays and the snowmageddon interfering with club nights, there’s been fewer chances for play this month. I’ve also been trying out iterations of my Miirym deck, which I’ll talk a little about tomorrow.
Next month, I’m hoping to get some minis and board games to the table.
January Roundup: Writing
With a mix of short and long posts, I was actually quite surprised to see the total number of posts for January. 54! Not bad! That total includes a handful of reviews, too:
- 2025’s Superman movie
- Jim Butcher’s novel, Twelve Months
- The first couple of episodes of Starfleet Academy
- The movie, Megalopolis
- Season 2 of Interview with the Vampire
- Our Game of the Month: Shipwrights of the North Sea
Still got a fair few reviews sitting in the queue, waiting to be posted.
Here were my other wordier, more thoughtful posts for January:
- 2026’s hobby resolutions
- Talkin’ about Sol Ring
- Which D&D subclasses scream “daddy issues”
- Thinking about the MTG card, Natural Order
- Setting the rules for our club’s upcoming MTG challenge
- Thoughts on Cole Wehrle leaving Leder Games
- Why your D&D clothing reflects your terrible personality
- Thoughts on rumours of Jes Goodwin’s retirement
- Why folk are wrong about mill
- D&D Inventories and your emotional baggage
- Just bemoaning modern discourse…
- Thinking out a Miirym deck
- What has and has not impacted GW’s stock price
- Alignment charts are astrology for nerds
- A breakdown of my Miirym deck
- Thoughts on some recent controversy over at The Dice Tower
As an aside, I’ve also launched a new blog, called Weather in my Ribs. I’ve been posting poetry. Mostly, these are posted every 3 days, but I posted some extra ones that were topical in the past week or so. Every so often, I’ve been sharing a poem on here if I’m particularly satisfied with it.
