Magic Monday: Creative Energy Deck Review

The Creative Energy preconstructed Commander deck from Modern Horizons 3 is a vibrant, synergistic brew that breathes new life into the energy mechanic, and this time, it’s not just a gimmick. This is a deck that I have played a lot and have remixed a few times. Let’s break down what makes this Jeskai (blue-red-white) deck tick, spark, and explode.

The face commander for the deck is Satya, Aetherflux Genius. He is a 3/5 Human Artificer with menace and haste, and he’s the engine of the deck:

Whenever Satya, Aetherflux Genius attacks, create a tapped and attacking token that’s a copy of another nontoken creature you control. You get two energy counters. At end step, sacrifice the token unless you pay an amount of energy counters equal to its mana value.

This ability rewards aggressive play, token synergy, and energy management, all at once. He’s a value engine that turns every attack into a potential combo.

As usual, there’s also a secondary commander. In this case, it’s Cayth, Famed Mechanist. Cayth gives all your nontoken creatures fabricate 1, and can populate or proliferate by tapping and paying two mana. She’s a slower, more grindy option that leans into artifact and token synergies. I think that she’s a cool, useful card, and potentially powerful, but I think Satya is more fun as the commander.

This deck finally gives energy the support it’s long deserved. Sure, there was another Jeskai energy deck released a few months before this one, as part of the Fallout set, but it was a bit… flat. I’ll review it at some point. There’s a lot of great stuff in this deck, though. Cards like Aetherstorm Roc, Lightning Runner, Gonti’s Aether Heart, and Aetherworks Marvel are all here to generate and spend energy in meaningful ways.

With cards like Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer, Myr Battlesphere, and Decoction Module, the deck leans into artifacts, creature tokens, and modular synergies, creating explosive turns when combined with Satya’s attack trigger.

Satya’s ability to copy creatures opens up wild plays with ETB effects, combat triggers, and even death triggers, especially when paired with cards like Angel of Invention or Combustible Gearhulk.

Now, whilst the deck is filled with cool cards, there are some real weaknesses here. None are especially surprising:

  • Energy Reliance: Without enough energy generators, Satya’s token copies vanish at end step. The deck needs careful planning and sequencing to avoid fizzling.
  • Mana Base: Like many precons, the mana base is functional but could use upgrades; especially for a three-color deck.
  • Low Instant-Speed Interaction: Only a few reactive spells like Swords to Plowshares and Akroma’s Will (probably the best reprint in the deck) are included, so the deck can struggle to respond to threats.

Where do we go with this deck? In terms of improving it, we can look at minimising the weaknesses we’ve already noted and doubling down on the strengths we’ve identified. Here are a few suggestions:

So, how does the deck shape up? Well, Creative Energy is a flavorful, synergistic deck that finally gives the energy mechanic a proper home in Commander. It’s aggressive, clever, and full of potential, but it rewards players who can juggle tempo, tokens, and resource management. With a few upgrades, it can go from sparking interest to a fully charged powerhouse.
