5 on Friday 07/07/23

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases new General’s Handbook for Age of Sigmar – A new season dawns for Age of Sigmar! With this latest General’s Handbook, Games Workshop returns to the old, yearly cycle after a wee while of running at 6-monthly books. This is a welcome change.

The leaks and reveal from the new book are very promising. As a big fan of magic, I’m looking forward to the focus on wizards in this book. The new primal magic rules are really exciting, and the scenarios I’ve looked at seem pretty promising. I also like that even if this book doesn’t give a lot to the Sons of Behemat, it’s the first in a while that hasn’t actively locked them out of much of the game. That’s a great step!

Atomic Mass Games releases Ewoks for Star Wars: Legion – Ewoks come to Star Wars Legion! The Empire’s days are surely numbered as their greatest adversaries (and ultimate vanquishers) join the battle:

I don’t know enough about Legion to make any comments about the rules or how these chaps will fit into the game. I just like seeing the Star Wars galaxy fleshed out on the tabletop.

Snarling Badger Studios releases Majestic 13 – I’ve picked up every game published this far by Snarling Badger… and someday I might even play one. Of course, I’ve ordered a printed copy of this one, too.

Like Snarling Badger’s previous offerings, Majestic 13 seems cool, thematic, and miniatures range-agnostic. I’m looking forward to my book arriving and am thinking it may be time to start printing up some minis for these games…

Mongoose releases World Builder’s Handbook for Traveller – I really feel that Mongoose has done such a good job with this edition of Traveller. They’ve revitalised the game and put out a lot of really good books. Of course, they also just put out a lot of books, so what makes this one special?

It’s a system toolkit. As tools go, I like this sort of book and have a few of them for different games and systems. Anything that helps a GM (or ‘referee’ to use Traveller’s own parlance) to flesh out their world and tell fuller stories is a good bet. I’m pretty confident as well, given Mongoose’s track record, that this will be a practical, solid book, well set out and clearly organised.

Games Workshop releases the first of their Dawnbringer books for Age of Sigmar –  We’re going to be spoilt for choice for Age of Sigmar scenarios for the forseeable future. With 12 in the new GHB (see above) and another 6 in here, things are looking interesting!

I do hope that the book is a little less focused than the Thondia one was. I feel too much of the Thondia battlepack revolved around the inclusion of an Incarnate. I wonder if this will be the same with Harbingers. Hopefully this will push some cool Path to Glory action.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Top Three 40K Lists for the Onerahi Open (10th Edition) @ Woehammer I gravitated to this post because of the GSC list. I’m still struggling to really get my head around what a GSC list should look like. Some food for thought here.

Best 3 Games with…The American Revolution! @ The Players’ Aid  As usual for these lists from The Players’ Aid, I know a minority of the games and the rest are new to me. In this case, it’s Washington’s War that I already knew. It’s a great game! I got it from my brother-in-law for Christmas a few years back and have got it to the table a few times since. Of the remaining two games, I’m really interested in Liberty or Death. I’ve still not got my existing COIN games to the table, so this might not be one I’ll be picking up in the immediate future.

Massive Darkness: Earth Elemental @ Azazel’s Bitz Box I’ve been looking at elementals recently in researching a potential alternative Sylvaneth army for Age of Sigmar. I guess that’s why this particular post from Azazel. It’s a nice, simple mini; well-painted. For what more can we really ask?

Fire Imps from Descent 2E (Lair of the Wyrm) @ DarthTom’s Gaming The first Imps shown in this post already look great. The second batch are just next level. Such a cool effect, and some really good advice.

New to Me – June 2023 @ Dude! Take Your Turn! Ooh, some interesting games in this post! Darwin’s Journey looks really cool, and I’d like to find out a bit more about Order Overload. I like this sort of post because it shows me so many cool, tempting games. I hate this sort of post because it shows me so many cool, tempting games…

Since my last 5 on Friday, here’s what’s appeared on NoRerolls:

I don’t really know what this week is going to feature. There’s another investigative RPG post tomorrow. After that, I dunno…

Catch y’all soon!

  1. Thanks for the link! If you don’t have a terrible memory, you might like Order Overload. It just does nothing for me. I found it stressful, but my memory sucks
