It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.
Releases and Previews
Every week there are many games and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:
Days of Wonder announces Ticket to Ride: New York – As a huge fan of the Ticket to Ride series, it’s cool to see the publishers experimenting with the formula. In this case, they are creating a short, quick version of the game:
Clocking in with a 10 to 15 minute play time, this seems like it will be a great, little filler game. Very keen to pick this up when it comes out!
Another cool Guildball mat from Deepcut Studio – We’ve previously taken a look at other Deepcut mats, including their new line of Guildball mats. Like the last one, this offering looks really good and is well-themed to a specific team. In this case, we’re looking at the map for the Farmers Guild:
As usual, take it for granted that I fully endorse the quality of Deepcut’s mats. They’re great, and if you’re a fan of Guildball and, even better, use the farmers, then this is worth a look!
Evil Hat releases Fate Horror Toolkit – Fate is awesome. You know it is. If you don’t know it, then you really should. It’s my favourite setting-neutral system out there. Given that it is setting-neutral, toolkits are handy for developing your own game and setting:
I’ve done a lot of horror RP in the past, so this really appeals to me to bring one of my favourite genres over into Fate. The previous toolkit I picked up for Fate was good, so my hopes would be high for this product.
Ramshackle Games puts out new resin armour plates for converting Gaslands cars – Gaslands looks so interesting and so much fun. It’s also a grown-up(ish) version of playing with matchbox cars. Ramshackle have put out a new armour kit to help you make your cars look a lot more post-apocalyptic:
Keen to pick up something like this now that I’ve also bought a job lot of old matchbox cars to use for this game.
IDW’s put Nickelodeon game on Kickstarter – I don’t know that I like the look of this game from a gameplay perspective, but the miniatures look pretty fantastic:
The game is made of nostalgia for me, with really nice miniatures from Rugrats, Real Monsters, Hey Arnold and more. Worth looking at for the minis! Also, you know, you may like the game.
The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:
The Race is On! @ Dust Vultures – Skaven! Always love seeing the little ratmen. It’ll be cool to see the author’s completed tournament army and the models shared in this post look really good. I especially love the colours on the Warlock’s robes. They stand out really well and look fantastic. I want to see more – especially the 3 Stormfiends the author says are coming.
Match Report: Ratland Raiders VS Nevermoor Ravens @ The Discordia Cascade – More Skaven! Like myself, the author of this post got his Skaven Blood Bowl team from Black Scorpion Miniatures. Great pieces of resin, those models. Aside from that, the post has a lot of cool pictures and conveys the action in a really fun way, as though through a commentator.
Review: Anachrony @ The Top of the Table – I’ve only recently become aware of Anachrony and am cautiously curious about it. The review includes a lot of pics to get a good view of the components and the author gives a nice overview of the game and the time travel-ly mechanisms. Still not sure if it’s totally for me, but the author’s thoughts, particularly in the conclusion, do start to whet the appetite.
Modoc’s Picks – PWYW Titles from DriveThruRPG @ Rolling Boxcars – Just a short, little article that flags up some cool PDFs from DriveThruRPG where you can pay what you want for them. I’ll take a rummage through, but the only one that I’ve really got an awareness of is Fate Core. Of course, I love Fate Core. Fate Core is amazing. Great system. Check this one out first, then take a rummage through the other recommendations.
The Big Sexy Scratchbuild Kitbash Double Feature (Weapon Master & Ice Golems) @ Masks of Monsters – oh, these are interesting. I love what the author does with the clear plastic bits to make the ice golems. The other model looks great as well, but the ice golems are the highlight of this article for me. Go take a look!
Today, I also posted my weekly hobby update over on Hit Somebody.
See you next week.
