Garden of Nurgle Test Minis

As if I didn’t have enough to do with my current two projects…

In a recent post I outlined a handful of projects that I liked the idea of doing. Of the three, one project – Garden of Nurgle – is one that I’ve been thinking about for a while and saw as a bit of an opportunity to do something different. Following recent discussions with friends and the donation of a big bag of Sylvaneth parts, I’m actually pretty pumped to give this a go.

Although I’ve been in the hobby for a while (23 years, I think), I’ve not done many conversion for the better part of a decade. You know, between now being as active for a while, and then trying to do better generally. I’ve enjoyed just building standard stuff for my Necrons and Gloomspite recently, and I sold off my old Chaos Space Marines army that was chock-full of cool conversions. I maintain that Chaos is the best force for conversions, as there are so many opportunities to make really cool minis.

What appeals most about this army is that it will be an army full of kitbashes and conversions, combining elements of Nurgle and the Sylvaneth to create a corrupted forest of Nurgle. I decided to start out at 1500 points, and wrote a list that is not at all competitive, but contains the miniatures that I have considered converting.

Last night, or more accurately in the early hours of this morning, I spent some time putting together a few plaguebearers using parts from the Plaguebearers, Dryad and Revenants boxes. Here was the first chap, based on a Revenant body with a Plaguebearer gut greenstuffed on. I went back a little later and added a Sylvaneth face emerging from the belly.

I then had a go at a second mini. Because I’d used a Plaguebearer torso in the previous miniature, I decided to use the legs and back of that plaguebearer for this one. I hollowed it out a big more, shaved down the back of a Revenant torso and greenstuffed it into the cavity. I then build up around it with more greenstuff. There was a bit of a gap between the legs, so I grabbed a Revenant loinclothy/tabardy thing. This actually was quite long and went slightly below the feet, so I mounted him onto a fallen branch that will be part of his basing so that I could base him without the cloth getting in the way. For a weapon, I used a Revenant sword, but it was a bit too clean. I applied some texture to make it nice and grotty:

As an aside, I had intended to use my trusty DecoArt Texture Sand Paste to rought up the sword, but when I opened up my pot, I was met with a surprise:

Ew. Yeah, that went gross. Will need to find some more. In the meantime, I used my Vallejo earth texture instead. It’s a lot heavier than the sand texture though, so I may been to go back and scrape some off.

So that’s two minis using the Revenant parts, but most of the bodies I have are Dryads. My third test mini used a Dryad body. I took a mound of maggots from the Plaguebearer kit that I think were intended as basing materials. I shaved down the underside, trimmed ones end and attached it to the body to be a maggoty stomach. With a bit of greenstuff to blend it in, it looked pretty good. Plaguebearer arms followed, with the sword arm being trimmed at the shoulder to allow for repositioning. The head is the awesome fly head from the Plaguebearer kit. Since the photo was taken, I added a branch to the model’s back to add some height and bulk.

I’m actually pretty happy with how these turned out. They have a wee bit of a Dark Age of Sigmar/AoS28 feel to them. I think a Dark colour scheme would help to carry this through the army, but we’ll see what comes to me when I get around to looking at paint schemes.

In terms of models going forward, I have rough plans for most of the miniatures in my list. I’m not sure yet about all of the characters, but I have a rough plan for the Daemon Prince. I think Horticulous Slimux could, thematically, be used unchanged, but I’d like to at least add some nice basing details. I think building these will be a slow burn, as I’m enjoying the trial and error of relearning how to do (very) basic greenstuffing and mixing and matching parts. I’m in no rush.

In terms of basing, I’m going muddy. My current two forces, the Necrons and Gloomspite, as both using desert bases and I’m bored of them. To be honest, the basing decision for the Gloomspite was based on cowardice. basing worries me a bit, and I know I have a good method for basing in a desert style. This time, I intend to do muddy bases with grass tufts and goopy, green puddles. And, as I was typing this, the postie just knocked to drop off my mud!

So, a couple of things to round off. First, this will be a slow burn when it comes to building. I’m enjoying just trying stuff out and I’m also wanting to keep going with my other painting. I say that, of course, as if I’m making much progress at the moment. Hah! I slay me. Second, I’m really chuffed about building up some Nurgle Daemons that I can use in either AoS or 40K. Even with the Sylvaneth parts, these are still Nurgle Daemons through and through. It does remind me that I need to go back and rebase my Tzeentch Daemons. Now they would suit desert bases! At the moment, their bases are just slathered in glue and dipped in fine gravel and they look like ass. A quick bit of rebasing would be good.

Anyway, that’s where I am with the Nurgley stuffs!
