5 on Friday 26/08/22

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases Arcane Cataclysm boxed set for Warhammer: Age of Sigmar – It does feel like every second release from Games Workshop is a big ol’ boxed set. It must be working for them. This one sees the awesome forces of Tzeentch face off against the bland and negative-play-experience-inducing forces of the Lumineth Realm Lords:

Okay, well, I’d usually say Tzeentch is awesome, but this box leans a bit heaviyl into the Tzaangors for me. The models are fine, but do they have to be the main thing in Every. Single. Tzeentch. Box? Ugh, give us some variety! I really love the new Curseling model that was first released in this box, but that’s now available on its own as well.

Modiphius taking preorders for Utopia Planitia sourcebook for their Star Trek Adventures roleplaying game – I really like how in good sci-fi, the ship develops a personality and becomes almost like part of the cast. Think of the Serenity in Firefly or the Rocinante in The Expanse. In an RPG, allowing the party to build a ship is a great way to give it a presence that a stock item simply would not possess. That is why I love books like this one, that give players the tools to build their own spacefaring vessels.

It’s hardly a new concept. Creating the shared ship was one of my favourite parts of the last Rogue Trader campaign we did. High Guard is one of my favourite books for Traveller because it’s the one that gives the players these same tools and opportunities. It’s great that Modiphius are taking this step to allow such great customisation in Star Trek Adventures. If I find myself running a campaign of this game, this book will be a must-buy.

Kobold Press releases Tome of Heroes for Dungeons & Dragons 5EYes, we all know how much I love Kobold Press. Yes, we all know that I am a shameless fanboy. Deal with it – this book looks great.

The Tome of Heroes has new races, subclasses, and other content to give a ton of cool options for players during character creation. Kobold excels at this sort of content, and I love it when it makes it into their Midgard books. This one is well worth a look.

GMT Games releases their CDG Solo System – Personally, I don’t really care for single player board games. It feel like a lot of effort to go to with nobody else around. This could just be laziness. For those who are less lazy and loves that fantastic strategy games put out by GMT, this is a pretty cool offering:

Essentially, this is an expansion for several of GMT’s games. It introduces a system to make running a single-player game easier for a number of their established multi-player titles. It looks interesting, and it will probably see people getting their games to the table more often. Cannae be a bad thing, that.

Spelljammer Shipyard released on DM’s Guild – With the new Spelljammer set seemingly sparse (ooh, alliteration!) on content, I imagine that the DM’s guild will pick up some of that slack. There are so many talented creators on there. Here’s just one small supplement for your Spelljammer-themed games of Dungeons and/or Dragons:

I suppose, actually, this is very much like the Star Trek Adventures book that you’ll see above. I did say that I liked the idea of building and customising ships, so it shouldn’t be a surprise to see more of the same in that regard.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Grant’s Top 10 Solitaire Wargames – 2022 Edition @ The Players’ Aid  As I said above, solo gaming isn’t for me, but I do find lists like this interesting, especially because I would like to explore wargames a bit more. Some familiar titles in here, but the majority are new to me.

Dwarvenforge Wildlands: Bleakmyre Swamp Terrain @ Heretic 30K Oh, this looks great! This is really perfect for games of Frostgrave: Ghost Archipelago, and I actually think it would be cool for Malifaux as well. It would be good for representing the swamps. Some great pics in here, especially with the fantastic pirate models added in.

Next Week’s Preorders: Chaos Daemons! Possessed, Classic Chaos Minis @ Sprues & Brews I read the Sprues & brews previews pretty religiously. It’s these and the new Battletome/Codex reviews that I like most from them. This one previews one of the few things that could get me mildly excited for 40K; the new Daemons book. I mean, it lets me play 40K (if I should ever want a game of Bloathammer) without having to paint 40K models. I should say, my disdain for the state of 40K is nothing to do with Sprues & Brews. Their stuff is actually really good!

Fluff: Korppi Varjolelu @ Swords After Dark – Done right, Inq28 stuff is bursting with uniqueness, weirdness, and personality. This is Inq28 done right. The model is cool and dark and creepy. The fluff is fitting, and makes for a good, quick read..

2000pts of Skaven @ Lair of the Lagomorph Not a huge amount to say here aside from just stating the obvious; that this is a gorgeous army. The colour scheme really works, and the presentation for the photo is great, too. I also love the classic castle wall in the background!

This week on NoRerolls, I’ve shared a deck of card I made for Paranoia. There’s been a bit more RPG content lately, which I like. I’m glad that’s featuring a bit more just now.

Catch ya’ll next week!
