5 on Friday 16/09/22

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Forgeworld releases White Scars helmets and shoulders – Although I don’t much to play Horus Heresy as a game (in the grim Power Armour of the Power Armour there is only Power Armour!), I do quite like the book series. I think that if I were to play Power Armour 30,000™, I’d likely go Thousand Sons, Word Bearers, Iron Warriors, or White Scars. Forgeworld are currently taking preorders for some lovely White Scars accessories:

I like the helmets a lot. They aren’t overdone. They’re simple, but they’re thematic. The topknots are just enough to establish them as White Scars. The shoulder pads are fine, too. They’re just shoulder pads with the legion insignia, so there’s not a huge amount to say there. Yeah, these are cool.

Modiphius releases Assault on the Fuhrer Train, an adventure for Achtung! Cthulhu – At 50 pages, this is a slender tome that promises a fun adventure for the aspiring assassin. This is the chance to behead the snake; to kill Hitler, himself.

I’ve enjoyed reading through the 2D20 edition of Achtung! Cthulhu. I’ve been aware of the property for a while, but only jumped on board with this latest edition. I don’t expect to be running a game of this any time soon, but adventures like this aren’t just adventures that you can run as-is. They also act to establish a tone and help to give a prospective GM an idea of how the game should feel.

Evil Hat launches Kickstarter campaign for their Apocalypse Keys RPGOh, Evil Hat continues to be one of my favourite RPG publishers. Aside from the fantastic content that they consistently produce, I love the small form-factor of their hardback books. I also like that they don’t rely too heavily on the FATE system. This book, for example, is a PBTA game, based on the fantastic Apocalypse World.

I like the idea of monstrous agents seeking to use their powers to save the world. Of the playbooks included in this game, I’m most drawn to The Last and The Found. The Last is a survivor of his own world’s apocalypse, whilst the Found has those fey vibes of walking between the real world and that of the dreaming. There’s a lot of potential in there.

Magic and Mages – A Fantasy City EXPANSION up on Kickstarter – There just seems to be no end to amazing 3D-printed terrain Kickstarters. There are a few more every week by my reckoning! This follow-up to the successful Mafic and Mages set is very cool:

At around £12 for the set, this seems to be very good value. If you want to expand it with all of the original set pieces, it rises to around £95. That’s a lot of money, but it’s also a sizeable bundle. If you’re equipped with a 3D printer and are cooling for some gorgeous buildings, this’ll be worth a look.

Kobold Press releases the Book of Ebon Tides – Yes, yes. I know. I’m just a Kobold Press fanboy. Actually, I’ve not picked up a Kobold Press book in quite some time. I’ve been sorely tempted, but I’m also aware that at some point my house will become full. It’s a real problem. It’s a real problem that is not helped by the publication of interesting and appealing books like this one.

Y’all know I’m a sucker for anything fey-related, or even just fey-adjacent. As is usual for Kobold Press, the book is packed full of new content, including spells, races, subclasses, monsters, items, and all sorts of other… stuff. It also promises to embrace the politics of the courts, which is just my favourite thing. The cover also features what appears to be a magical bear. That’s pretty hard to beat.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

First post on the blog @ Jk-Hobby  The birth of a new blog! Not only that, but some beautiful Skaven miniatures. Yeah, the Plague Monks are showing their age a little, but the author’s done a great job. Thanks for sharing!

How to Collect Gnomad Feastmasters @ Plastic Craic I’ve been enjoying reading about the Gnomad Feastmasters for the past wee while on Plastic Craic. I’ve not had a chance to read the Battletome, and they seem really fun! This followup article on how to actually get going with them in a practical sense is really useful. More temptation, though!

Review: Battle Systems Shanty Town Core Set @ Wargames Writer I like the Battle Systems terrain. I have some of their early stuff, and the newer stuff looks even better than that. I’m impressed that this set came with a neoprene mat, rather than just cardstock. This is a concise review that seems pretty fair and balanced.

Army Showcase – Chaos Wolves (Chaos Space Marines) @ FORTYK.W – I was just saying at club last night that Space Wolves fall a bit flat for me. I just don’t really like them. I love this Chaos-themed spin on them, though! I love the use of Radukar the Beast, and the converted Lord Discordant. That Venomcrawler looks great with the poor, unfortunate Ultramarine strapped to it. What a brilliant, unique army!

I played Age of Sigmar 3e! @ Metal Miniatures Welcome to the fold! I hope the author had fun with the game. There are some lovely pictures of the game. I also hadn’t heard of AoS Reminders, so will need to check them out.

* * *

It’s been a more active week than usual at NoRerolls. First, I reviewed a DM’s Guild supplement for D&D, Dungeon Babies. After that, I had a wee chat with an AI about some games I like. I also took a look at a Doctor Who-themed bundle from the good folk at Cubicle 7 and Humble Bundle. Finally, I had a look back at some older posts which showcased some alternative miniatures for Blood Bowl.

A good week, all in all.

Catch ya’ll next week!
