5 on Friday 13/01/23

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases Storm of Chogoris, a White Scars boxed set – I quite like the boxed sets that Games Workshop has been putting out for many of the main Space Marine chapters. The White Scars are a chapter that’s often slightly overlooked, but it’s an interesting one, and with good theming. I like the idea of a quick, mechanised, mounted force. This box is definitely all about that sort of play:

It doesn’t really feel like you get a lot in this box, but it’s cool. 6 bikers, a biker Chaplain, a couple of buggies, and a character. It’s always struck me as a bit odd that the White Scars character that was released is on foot. It seems so odd to have made that decision for such a bike-focused chapter. One the other hand, I suppose not everything in the army should be bike-based. Yeah, it’s a nice set.

MONSTER BOX currently seeking backers on Kickstarter – This is a cute, little set of 3D-printable monsters. I mean, there’s not much more to it. It’s a pretty simple (and adorable) campaign.

This seems fun, and I look at it in a bit more detail in this week’s Kickstarter-Watch post!

Onyx Path releases Victorian Age Mage – It’s been a wee while since I last featured an Onyx Path product. Despite having picked up Mage: The Ascension back in the 90s, I’ve never actually played it. I’d like to. I really like the whole “hacking reality” feel of the game. It would be interesting, therefore, to transpose that into the Victorian setting depicted in this book.

As with all of the 20th Anniversary range, this book will be beautiful. I wish the preview pages had shown a bit more of the artwork. Other than the expected content, something I’m delighted to see included are sections on mages around the world at the time of the setting. What are African mages like? Asian ones? Americans? It’s a nice touch and a cool acknowledgement that the era was not just limited to England and the wider British Empire.

Kromlech releases a fantasy football stadium –  This is so cool! Kromlech has put together this massive fantasy football stadium for games like Blood Bowl. How gorgeous is this?

This is a very expensive item, but for the size, it’s pretty understandable. At €500, this is very much for the hardcore Blood Bowl fan. I can’t justify it for myself, but truly this is a thing of beauty!

Greg Wright releases Folklore of the Feywild on the DMs Guild – Yes, we all know how much I love a fey-themed game or supplement. The courts of the fey are just such rich fodder for fantasy-based roleplaying. There are such interesting implications in any dealings with the fey. Supplements like this are very tempting for me:

This isn’t a long book, being only 43 pages, but it seems to cram in a fair amount of content. NPC generators, statblocks for 23 new creatures, advice for running games, a couple of magic items, and some fantastical artwork. The most interesting content is the promised advice on incorporating fey elements into other, established D&D settings.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Neon Necron @ Heretic Deb  I love this. The Necron is painted very simply in grey; an exercise in minimalism. On its own, this would be boring, but it’s paired so perfectly with the glow effect. It just pops and I love it. I love it.

Last year wrap up and new year starts @ Of Thoughts and Swords A nice summary post of the past year. The highlight for me is the Sisters of Battle army, though it’s nice to read of the author’s enthusiasm for the Imperial Knights. Thanks for sharing!

Mines and Meteors @ Lair of the Lagomorph – This is a nice post, sharing some simple-but-effective pieces of terrain. They’re Skaven-themed, too. That’s always a winner for me. I especially like the crashed wyrdstone/warpstone meteor. Flashbacks to Mordheim, eh?

Finding Mordheim @ Dice in the Dark Well, speaking of Mordheim… I love it, and I really like this post. I’ve got my rulebook on the shelf next to me and it’s such a great tome. The visual design is especially stunning, with truly beautiful black and white artwork. This is a really great, thorough article about a truly wonderful game.

More Recommended Hobby Blogs @ Musk’s Miniatures There are a load of good recommendations here. I really like some of the blogs listed here. Some, like The Sentry Box, Warphammer, A Tabletop Gamer’s diary, and Rob Hawkings are very familiar. Others, like The Old School Workshop, Magpie and Old Lead, and The Corvus Cluster are totally new to me. Some new bookmarks are coming from this post!

In the coming week, I’m looking to share more painted miniatures. I’ve finished a few and am working on more.

Catch ya’ll next week!

  1. This is the first pingback I’ve received in a long long time. I think most people have disabled that feature because it is used and abused by spammers. Thanks for the shout out. I’ll do another one in five or ten years god willing.
