5 on Friday 27/01/23

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases Lord Solar Leontus – As a thing in itself, I don’t much care for the Imperial Guard as an army. They’re fine, but I just don’t need them in my life. There are exceptions, of course. I’m sure they’d be great as the basis of an undead army or corrupted to the service of the Four-Armed Emperor. Of course, some individual models are just fantastic…

This Lord Solar Lontus model is gorgeous. I love the delicate, mechanical horse. This isn’t a rough creation either, but is finely wrought. It’s great. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens with the next Cities of Sigmar book. If we get a good mounted lord option, I could see myself picking this guy up for a suitably grand Cogfort/Greywater Fastness lord conversion!

Onyx Path launches Kickstarter campaign for a new edition of Pugmire – Pugmire is a fantastic game. I have the previous edition of it. Essentially, the book I have is 5E D&D with dogs. The idea of the dogs being the successors of man is really well-developed in the book and is really what sold me on the game. Now, there’s a Kickstarter campaign for a new edition:

I’ll be taking a closer look at the campaign later in the week. I’m curious to see how they’re taking this property forward.

Catalyst releases Null Value supplement for Shadowrun – Ah, Shadowrun. I have really fallen behind on my collection and am unlikely, I reckon, to catch up. I’m just not confident I’ll get it to the table. This latest resource book offers new threats to menace your group’s runners.

The book promises 10 significant threats, ranging from “hacker and technomancer groups to rogue AIs to mysterious entities”. This will be a useful resource for the GM looking to incorporate a big-bad into their campaign.

Warlord Games to release Caesar’s Gallic Wars, a starter set for Hail Caesar – Warlord is kind of the big beast of the historical games sphere, aren’t they? By that I mean that they aren’t the only game in town, but they’re often the first company you think of. They are currently taking preorders for their newest Hail Caesar starter set:

Hail Caesar is their massed battle historical system. This set will get you started with Warlord Games’ classic, well-established Roman and Celt lines. The box contains 80 Celts and 48 Romans, as well as a rulebook and accessories. The value seems pretty good, considering all you’re getting for your money.

NoRerolls releases Bio Hacker, a player class for CY_BORG –  Oh, hey, a release from us! This is the second NoRerolls item to be released on DriveThruRPG, following on from the Creative Inertia playset for Fiasco. This time, we looked at CY_BORG and put together a little character class supplement:

Bio Hacker shows a down-and-out MedTech, rapidly degenerating into a true mad scientist. This was a lot of fun to put together. At the time of writing, this is also on sale at half-price during the launch window!

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

More Hellboy, New Acquisitions, and a Miserable Room Tour @ Kuribo’s Painting  I love this Hellboy miniature. Such a good job with the painting, too. Thanks for sharing! The tour is also cool. It’s always interesting to see where other folks do their hobbying. I’ll have to do the same at some point.

Grant’s Most Anticipated Wargames of 2023! @ The Players’ Aid As usual for a list from The Players’ Aid, I’ve not heard of most of these, but so many of them sound super interesting. I’m especially intrigued by Red Dust Rebellion, WerWolf, and Storm Over Jerusalem. Will have to look into those…

10 years, 10 articles @ Scent of a Gamer – This is a fun, little retrospective of the Scent of a Gamer blog in which the author selects one post from each year of the blog. I might steal this idea in a couple of years! My favourite articles that are highlighted in this post are the ones from 2015, 2016, 2019, and 2022.

Marvel Crisis Protocol tournament report: MCP Monthly Mayhem 22Jan2023 @ The Bovine Overlord I really do not know much about this game. I’ve got some pretty big issues with the company behind it, but I do hear nothing but good things about MCP. Even without knowledge of the game, I really appreciate and enjoy a good event writeup. This is a really good writeup.

Top Three AoS Lists for Scottish Lasters @ Woehammer Scottish Age of Sigmar is the best Age of Sigmar. Oh, sure, other UK and European AoS is fine, but Scottish AoS is bestest! Some good lists by some lovely folks. Really, the most interesting list for me is the Tzeentch one.

Since my last 5 on Friday, I’ve published the following posts:

In the coming week, I’m looking to hopefully finish some more minis. I’ll be sharing some 3D prints as well. There will be a Kickstarter-Watch, too. I’m also working on more DTRPG releases, including some Fiasco playsets and a class for MÖRK BORG. Here’s a small preview of that, snipped from Affinity Publisher:

Catch ya’ll next week!
