5 on Friday 10/02/23

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Forgeworld releases new undead star player for Blood Bowl – Forgeworld continues to quietly release wee characters and addons for Blood Bowl and Necromunda. This latest offering is the chainsaw-wielding Bryce Cambuel:

Do you see what they did there? Were this Warhammer, I’d be pretty annoyed at characters named for this type of reference, but for Blood Bowl, it works. The mini is cool, fits the game, and is fun. Spot on!

Forty Fiends, a MÖRK BORG bestiary, currently on Kickstarter – MÖRK BORG, you say? A bestiary, you say? The rhetorical questions are a bit overdone, you say? Forty Fiends is a cool, little supplement for MÖRK BORG that has really caught my eye:

With 40 beasties, some cool art, awesome layouts, and a very reasonable price, this is a good campaign. If you’re interested, you’d better jump on it quickly, as there are only a few days left to back it.

Mongoose releases The Order of Prometheus for Traveller – Mongoose has produced such a good edition of Traveller and it’s great to see them continuing to expand it. This time, it’s a new adventure based within the Solomani Confederation:

The Order of Prometheus explores the story of a secret society bent on genetic manipulation and the shepherding of humanity in a somewhat dubious golden future. I have a thing for this sort of premise, featuring cults and groups that foster corruption within a society. This appeals to me.

Hexengarde 3D terrain currently on Kickstarter – This is a really cool set of fantasy-themed 3D-printable buildings. This is Tired World’s second Kickstarter campaign and we’re starting to see the consistent quality of their models. I really loved their previous offering, a steampunk dwarf skyport. let’s take a look at their fantasy city:

I really like that there’s a mix of intact and ruined buildings. This hugely increases usability over a range of games. Want a living city for your city-oriented games? Gotcha! What about a ruined city for games like Frostgrave or Morheim? Gotcha! Cool minis. Decent price. Good stuff!

The Black Hand, a Vampire: The Masquerade supplement, released on Storytellers Vault –  In my games of Vampire, I tend to avoid using the Sabbat as player characters. I get that there’s no “good guy” in VTM, and that’s fine, but the truly unhinged nature of the Sabbat makes it hard to really build and develop stories around these characters. here’s a book to help with playing as Sabbat characters:

Reviews are generally positive, including from regular Sabbat players. Both the text and art are praised as being decent. The new Disciple Powers, Pack Types and the inclusion of House Goratrix are particularly interesting to me!

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Non-GW Wargames @ Xenos Games  There are some really solid choices in this list of non-GW miniatures games. Of the 5 games listed, I’m familiar with 4 of them and like 3 of them. Malifaux is a particularly interesting pick for me, as I’m looking to get back into it at the moment. I actually played my first game in a while last night.

Realm of Warcry; Chapter 2, Part 6 @ LeadBalloony I just love these minis. The use of the Bretonnian helmets is especially cool. Crossing them and Nurgle is always gonna be a winner for me!

Tales from the Paint Table – part 8 @ Tales From the Tabletop – As I mentioned above, I’m getting back into Malifaux, so it’s great to look at what others are doing. In this post, I especially like the Shadow Emissary and Minako Rei. The white on her and her friends is fantastic.

Making Terrain for McDonald’s Toys @ Tabletop Thoughts This is just a quick, wee post showing what you can do with discarded toys that could otherwise be described as plastic crap. The author has taken them and actually produced a really cool set of statues. Good work!

It was time for Thomas to leave. He had seen everything @ Twitchy Bristles 40K players can sometimes be a bit guilty of taking their grimdark setting too seriously. That’s quite funny to me because the 40K setting is ludicrous in a lot of different ways. That’s why I love posts like this, where it’s obvious that someone is just having fun. Fantastic work on these tanks, but my favourite bit is actually the statue of the Fat Controller. Brilliant!

Since my last 5 on Friday, I’ve published the following posts:

In the coming week, I’m going to have a wee think about Malifaux. I’d like to go for a finished model or two as well.

Catch ya’ll next week!
