Well, it had to happen sooner or later, right?
This month’s game of the month was also last year’s game of the year, at least according to my top 50 list. Warhammer: Age of Sigmar is a game that I play at least every few weeks. I’d like to get some more games in, truth be told, but I’m struggling to get folk interested in games beyond our usual club night. I do take some opportunities to play elsewhere though, including just this weekend at an event in Inverness.

When Age of Sigmar was first revealed, I thought it looked terrible. To be fair, I only really had that impression because the game was, indeed, terrible. Sure, the core was fine, but with some very silly warscroll rules and no points-based system for choosing your army, it just wasn’t a good game.
Age of Sigmar also replaced Warhammer Fantasy Battles, which was discontinued and, via the End Times storyline, blown up. I loved WFB, so this also caused some resentment in me.
It was not until two things happened that I dipped my toes in and properly explored Age of Sigmar. The first thing was the release of the first General’s Handbook. This introduced a points-based system for army selection and some limits on what you could take. The game needed this.
The second event was our local club launching a slow-grow league. I went with Tzeentch for this, as their first edition book and new miniatures came out at around the same time.

I document this more fully in a post from 2017:
Since the first GHB, Age of Sigmar has really gone from strength to strength. Throughout the first two editions of game, I played on and off, fielding bits and pieces of Tzeentch, Nurgle, and the Sons of Behemat. I never really fielded much that was fully painted, though. It’s only really been since third edition that I’ve started to focus on painting minis, delving properly into my projects, and really embracing the hobby in a way that I hadn’t since I was a child.
I’m delighted that I’ve been able to really push myself and finish, so far, three Age of Sigmar armies:
I also bought an Orruk army from a friend and, more recently, some Kharadron Overlords as well. And, you know, all the other projects… I like AoS! I’ve gone in a bit too deep, but I really do love it.

In terms of the game itself, I love that it’s easy to get to the table and quite straightforward to pick up. Now, there are some armies and combinations of miniatures and rules can get a bit more complicated, but you can field a nice, simple army that is easy to play. They’re called the Sons of Behemat!
Kidding!
Kind of…
I struggle to find time to get to a lot of events, but I’d like to try to attend more of them. It’s just a bit of a commitment, what with us being quite remote and having a job that, although very generous with holidays, does not allow flexibility in when those holidays are taken.
I could probably go to more. I think I’m probably making excuses…

Age of Sigmar is my favourite game. It makes me happy. I like trying out different things, playing against different armies, and talking about it with like-minded players. I just wish I could get it to the table a wee bit more than I already do.
