Bundle of Holding: Iron Kingdoms: Requiem

As a setting, I quite like the Iron Kingdoms. I also like the model ranges that go with the Iron Kingdoms miniatures games, Warmachine and Hordes. Some people refer to these collectively as ‘WarmaHordes’. We do not like those people. Not at all. I explored some of the armies a few years back, but I’ve generally not covered the games and setting all that much.

There have been previous editions of the roleplaying game, including some with bespoke systems. This latest version, like so many others, uses the 5E Dungeons & Dragons ruleset.

I like that this setting is being revisited. The story has moved on over the past few years of the miniatres game, so it’s great to see this reflecte in the RPG.

This bundle features 10 items spread across two tiers. The first tier is priced at $14.95 and will net you 5 items:

  • Iron Kingdoms: Requiem Corebook
  • IK Monsternomicon
  • IK GM’s Toolkit
  • Legend of the Witchfire
  • An Echo in the Darkness

Clearly, the most important item in this tier is the Corebook. It’s what you actually need to play the game, and it contains all the rules for the setting, including new races, classes, backgrounds, feats, items, spells, and more. There’s also a ton of background information on the Iron Kingdoms and the inhabitants thereof.

The next biggest item here is the Monsternomicon. It’s a bestiary! We love a good bestiary. With over 80 creatures, drawn from the 20 years of development that this setting has enjoyed, this is a satisfyingly weighty tome.

Legend of the Witchfire is also an important part of this bundle. The Iron Kingdoms campaign setting began with a series of adventures known as The Witchfire Trilogy, and this is a continuation of that classic story. I love that whilst this new edition is forward-looking, advancing the story, it also values the past.

The second tier contains a further 5 items. It is priced on a threshold that is currently placed at $30.81. For the price, you also get all of the content of the previous tier. The new items are:

  • Borderlands and Beyond
  • The Borderlands Survival Guide
  • 3 IK Borderlands Adventures
    • Escape the Mind Slavers
    • Shadow of the Seeker
    • A Strange Light Breaks

This whole tier is based around the Borderlands. The Borderlands and Beyond is a big beast of a book that explores this setting. It looks at Ios and Rhul, as well as the Bloodstone Marches and the Glimmerwood. I’ve always really loved the Trollbloods, so the Glimmerwood is really the standout bit for me.

The other items in the tier give more background, rules and adventures set in and around the Borderlands. A great way to further expand your new game!

In terms of value, the whole thing is pretty good. The first tier is all you really need to run the game, and it does give you enough to keep your players entertained for a long time. If you do shell out for the second tier, that’s a load more content and more fleshing out of the world. Not only does that represent more choices for your players in character creation, but it equips the GM with a wider knowledge of the world and a bigger sandbox in which to play.
