Bundle of Holding: Root RPG

Earlier this year, I wrote about playing Root for the first time. To summarise, I liked it. It’s a good game. It’s a very good game. It’s a very interesting game. Something I really love about the game is the asymmetry of it. Each person is basically playing a whole different game, and that’s exciting to me. What also appeals is the tone and artwork of the game. it’s just an altogether well-presented package.

In addition to the board game, there’s also a roleplaying game bu Magpie Games. I didn’t have all that much of an awareness of Magpie until their strong showing at the recent ENnie nominations (see my takes: Part 1 and part 2). They’ve got a lot of really good products.

This bundle is all about their Root RPG. Unlike many Bundles of Holding, this is a single-tier bundle. There’s one flat price of $14.95 that gets you everything in the bundle:

  • Root: The Roleplaying Game
  • Travelers & Outsiders
  • Root Clearing Booklet
  • 4 Root quickstart sets

The Root RPG is a PBTA game of woodland adventure. Like the board game, it’s easy to misinterpret this game as a whimsical journey like Ryuutama or Wanderhome. It’s definitely a game about the journey, but it’s more of an action-packed swashbuckling game than a whimsical forest romp. Your party of vagabonds are drawn from the playbooks. These are a common element of PbtA books and one which I really like.

Something else that I like about the Root RPG is how the setting is defined as the game goes along by the relationships between the players. I do like games where the setting forms organically in response to player decisions.

This bundle is a great deal. You get most of what’s available for Root at a fantastic price. Wholehearted recommendation, this!
