It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.
Releases & Previews
Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:
Games Workshop releases new Kill Team Annual – I’ve never really gotten into the latest edition of Games Workshop’s 40K-themed skirmish game, Kill Team. I think my biggest issue with it is that it’s essentially just a series of big box releases. That’s not a model I like. I suppose it’s nice, therefore, to see some support for the game that goes beyond these big boxes:

Games Workshop has long done a good job with these annual book releases for their various games. They tend to introduce some cool idea or some new rules, or at least gather up rules that were previously published in places like White Dwarf. This’ll be an essential purchase for the Kill Team fans.

Evil Hat releases The Codex of Worlds, a book of settings for Monster of the Week – I’ve had Monster of the Week for some time but, like most non-D&D games these days, I’ve struggled to get it to the table. Books like this potentially make that a more realistic prospect, giving cool settings in which to place our games:

I’m particularly interested in Agents in Black, for that classic MiB gameplay, and the alt-renaissance vibes of Dreaming With the Gods. At over 400 pages, there’s a ton of content in here.

Atomic Mass Games to release We Are Brave, a Padme Amidala set for Star Wars: Shatterpoint – The tempting treadmill of Shatterpoint releases continues apace. I love that most of their releases embrace the aesthetic of the cartoons, though this one is a bit more film-centric:

I’m not a believer in the idea that every character should be a soldier or even any use at all in a combat situation, so I’m not a huge fan of Padme being included here. That said, the minis are great, and the rules look interesting. If I take the plunge, I’d grab it.

Lightpress Media releases Dice & Discontent, a punk ethos RPG zine – So, I wasn’t sure what this would be when I picked it up. It’s not what I expected. I thought it would be a wee collection of short games. It’s not, though. It’s something quite different.

It’s actually something of a manifesto for the titular ethos. It covers pretty similar ground as some of my posts on RPGs and mental health, inclusion, and investigative play. If you enjoyed those, you’ll probably like these as well.

Compendium of Vicious Mockery insults released on DM’s Guild – Okay, so… the title isn’t great. It really makes it sound like a racist jokebook for D&D. In practice, this actually seems pretty cool, going by the previews.

It’s a book of D20 tables of insults, broken up by character race. The insults are a bit clumsy and cumbersome in places, but that’s actually something I like. I could sell that in-game, you know? I like the deliberateness of an overly-wordy insult. This seems really fairly priced for what it is.

Blog Posts & Articles
The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:
Warhammer 40k: Kill Team Annual 2023 | Supplement Review @ Sprues & Brews – Yeah, this confirms what I expected. Games Workshop really does put out really fantastic annuals for their systems. The campaign stuff sounds particularly great.
Kruleboyz Tech: House Hopping @ Woehammer – Oh, this is interesting. What it really does is highlight the jankiness of scenery/garrison rules, but it’s also a valid tactic! I like this sort of really specific take on a tactic/rule.
First Impressions: Mr. President: The American Presidency, 2001-2020 from GMT Games @ The Players’ Aid – This is a game that I have been pretty curious about since it was first announced. Looking at this post, the game might not be the best place to start with solo games. It just seems a bit huge and potentially unwieldy to the new player. It does look good, though…
New Army – Bloodtoofs Ironjawz @ A Tabletop Gamer’s Diary – Orruks! I love them. They’re a fantastic army, and it’s cool to see folk taking them on. The red colour scheme that their author of this post has gone for looks great!
Winning With Grace: How to Be a Great Opponent @ Plastic Craic – I’m not normally a fan of interview posts, but I’m making an exception on this one. It’s got some good commentary. It’s got some cool pictures. It’s a topic that matters. Yeah, this is a good post.
