5 on Friday 01/09/23

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases new Cities of Sigmar army box – Whilst I do still love the old Empire miniatures, it’s great to see the Cities of Sigmar get a proper update to bring it fully into AoS. The new models, as you can see, are very nice:

The book is also very strong. I’m not sure that I see myself grabbing these any time soon, but the struggle was very real when the preorders went up. I’ve long said that the Idoneth Deepkin is the book I could most put to work as a ‘proxy book’, but the new Cities of Sigmar book might take that crown. We’ll see.

Sine Nomine Publishing releases Cities Without Number –  Stars Without Number is a solid, respected sci-fi sandbox roleyplaying game. Now, Sine Nomine Publishing is releasing Cities Without Number, their cyberpunk sandbox roleplaying game:

First of all, I’d love to see this book get a nod at next year’s ENnie awards for best cover design. That cover is beautiful! I like Stars Without Number and I love the cyberpunk genre, so this is very appealing!

Atomic Mass Games releases Fistful of Credits, a Cad Bane set for Star Wars: Shatterpoint – Another week, another gorgeous set of tragically tempting Shatterpoint miniatures. This time, it’s all about legendary bounty hunter, Cad Bane:

The skinny jeans and Tory Power Stance aside, this is another great set. I saw some Shatterpoint models in person for the first time last week and I must say that actually seeing the models makes me less likely to pick them up. It’s not that they aren’t great (they are!), but more that they look spindly. I know I’ll break them!

Free League launches Kickstarter campaign for Moria – Through the Doors of Durin for The One Ring RPG – The new version of The One Ring from Free League has been well-received. To be fair, the previous edition from Cubicle 7 was also very popular. The latest crowdfunding campaign is, following a slight delay, now live. It’s for a Moria-based supplement:

Like any Free League product, this looks to be a beautifully produced book. It’s just a pity that it’s totally lost on me. I just don’t really care all that much about Tolkien or LotR. Still, the art is fantastic!

Cubicle 7 releases a pair of Doctor Who supplements to celebrate 60 years of Doctor Who –  With the big anniversary celebration this year, Cubicle 7 has released a pair of supplements for their Doctor Who roleplaying game. The first book is about the original run of 8 Doctors, whilst the second is for the revived series that started with Eccleston:

These books appear to give a little bit about each Doctor, via the Lustre of Starlight series of adventures. I get the impression that these books will be about breadth, rather than depth, but that’s ok. It’ll be a taster of each Doctor, rather than really getting into it with any individual one.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

August 2023 Gaming @ Dude! Take Your Turn! Oh, some good games, here! The Resistance is an absolute classic, and Eldritch Horror is a favourite of mine. I’ve not played any more of the games on this list, but there are some that I’m keen to try. Red Flag Over Paris is probably the one I’d be keenest to play.

Warrior Nun meets Stargrave @ Chris rambles about stuff Stargrave is fun and Warrior Nun is fantastic, so this is a pretty good pairing to me! This is a slightly older post, but it’s actually the first of 4 posts, including one published as recently as last Friday. Worth a look for fans of both things or those interested in customising their gameplay based on the media they like to consume. Clearly, that’s something that I enjoy!

Twilight Struggle: Red Sea – Conflict in the Horn of Africa from GMT Games – Action Point 2 @ The Players’ Aid As a big fan of Twilight Struggle and other CDGs, I need to get this game! This is an interesting breakdown of different elements of the game, laying out ways in which it is similar to the original, and others ways in which it differs. A good read.

Player Disempowerment @ Make a Sanity Roll I speak a fair bit about player agency, and the importance of that in meaningful gameplay. This post is about occasionally putting limits and conditions on that for the sake of good storytelling and verisimilitude. It’s an interesting point and one which is well made in the post!

PAPA’S GOT A BRAND NEW BAG pt: 1 The Daemon Prince @ Plastic Craic When I made my first Daemon Prince of Nurgle miniature, it was for use in the Maggkin army, rather than its native Slaves to Darkness. I had never actually made it to the table in that army. This post might change that, though! I hadn’t properly looked at the prospect of using it since the new Slaves to Darkness book was released.

There have been a few posts since my last 5 on Friday:

This week, I’m going to look at my game of the month for August, along with my resolutions roundup.

  1. Thanks for the link!

Red Flag Over Paris is definitely a game I’m glad to have gotten back to the table.

It’s also available on the “Rally the Troops” web site to play online.
