5 on Friday 06/10/23

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases Codex: Space Marines for Warhammer 40,000 – With a new edition comes the latest edition of the most ubiquitous army in the (space)lands, the Space Marines.

I can’t pretend that this is a book that excites me, but I fully accept that I am in the minority as, by all reports, sales of Space Marine kits end up subsidising everything else that GW does. Lash at it, lads; it takes all sorts!

Mongoose releases Adventure Class Ships supplement for Traveller –  What’s a sci-fi RPG without some good ship supplements? This is a supplement with loads of cool ships for players to acquire, fly, crash, and generally wreck in the course of their adventures!

There’s a ton of content here, with a wide variety of different ship types represented:

  • Exploration Ships
  • Merchant Ships
  • Passenger Ships
  • Working Ships
  • Military Ships
  • Traveller-built Ships
  • Aslan, Sword Worlds and Vargr Ships

Exciting stuff that really pads out the setting. These are supposedly the most common types of ships plying the trade lanes, so it makes sense to see them get a spotlight.

Osprey releases A War Transformed – I continue to really like all the cool, wee games from Osprey, even if I’ve not gotten to play many of them. One of their newest games that caught my attention is A War Transformed:

I’ve got a soft spot for alternative WW1 and WW2 fiction, so this should be pretty cool. It’s not going to be the auto-buy that The Doomed was, but I’ll be keen to see some writeups now that it’s out.

Forgeworld releases a Vargheist for Blood Bowl – More cool Blood Bowl minis are always welcome. This time it’s a very active and animated Vargheist release alongside the Vampire team:

I actually think this would look far better used in age of Sigmar than in Blood Bowl. I reckon that would make a fantastic Abhorrant Archregent for the Flesh-Eater Courts. You wouldn’t even have to do any conversions; just swap out he bas size

Atomic Mass Games taking preorders for new Marvel Crisis Protocol core set, Earth’s Mightiest –  I hear so many good things about Marvel Crisis Protocol. The game seems really solid, and the models look great. I’m just a bit put off by the painting aspects and the price of the individual models/sets. Now, Atomic Mass Games is putting out a new starter set:

A new core set represents a fantastic point for new players to jump on. Oh, dear…

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Starfield: Void Between the Stars @ Faith, Fiction & Fatherhood – I haven’t gotten around to playing Starfield yet and, honestly the more I read about it the lower a priority it becomes. This is a well-reasoned piece about the game from a solid, reliable RPG blogger.

Board Game Corner #1 @ The Nerdd I love living where I do. I actually like the remoteness a lot of the time. I do envy folks in bigger town, cities, or areas close to either of those things when I see the sorts of groups, stores and such that they have access to. This sounds great!

REVIEW: Into the Odd – Remastered by Chris McDowell @ Taskerland Taskerland reviews are very thorough, aren’t they? This one features Into the Odd, a game about which I have previously expressed some interest. I’m not the biggest fan of OSR games, but it caught my interest. The review comes out pretty positive and does stoke the fires of my curiosity all the further.

Iyanden: So how’s painting up that 1000pts going? @ Karma Hammer It’s always cool to see someone’s project moving along. This Iyanden army is gorgeous and vivid. it’s also got a focus on the Wraith units that I really love from the Eldar army!

Kylie Minogue is now a Legendary Creature in Magic: The Gathering @ Games Hub I mean, this is just cool, innit?

  1. Cheers for the shout out and the kind words about the Iyanden m’dude. The Space Marines codex is mildly exciting (in that I think it’s interesting to see where they are going with this edition’s codexes and design), but honestly what’s more exciting is them re-releasing the mission cards. Feels a bit embarassing having to borrow them from the one guy at the club who has them.

    1. Och, I get that the Space Marines are cool and book is exciting to many folk… it’s just the saturation gets old. And I agree that it’s good to see where the edition is heading.

Your Iyanden are looking great. I love bold, colourful armies.
