Bundle of Holding: Novel Writing Game Tools 2023

Bundle of Holding is currently presenting a selection of tabletop games and creativity tools for aspiring writers. I like this idea of gamifying writing. It’s actually something that Bundle of Holding has already done, at around this time last year as we head towards November and NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month.

As usual, this bundle consists of two tiers. The first costs $9.95 and contains the following items:

  • Alone on a Journey
  • Seven Wonders
  • Apothecaria
  • Apothecaria: Shimmersnow Valley
  • Recipe on Kmiydish Paper

A fair few of the titles here are solo games. Y’all know I’m not big on solo games, but this is an interesting bundle with some real highlights. Apothecaria is a solo game that sees you playing as a village witch as you brew potions for the locals. It’s a journaling game. I don’t completely know what that means, but if I’m thinking along the right lines, then it will be a fantastic writing prompt, albeit on a very specific theme. I’m tempted to give this a go out of sheer curiosity.

Recipe on Kmiydish Paper is also really interesting. It’s about food, but you’re not playing as a chef or someone who appreciates food. Instead, you play as the recipe itself, passed down through generations and evolving as you go. This is such a strange and unique idea. Intriguing, innit?

The second tier is priced on the threshold. At the time of writing, this was sitting at $20.38. For this price, you get everything in the first tier plus a further four items:

  • The Slow Knife
  • Curse of the House of Rookwood
  • Not a Demon
  • Bleak Spirit

I am familiar with none of these titles, but they do sound interesting. The Slow Knife’s cool villain-themed character exploration is a particular highlight in this tier.

The bundle as a whole is very interesting. I’m not sure if it’s one that I’m going to pick up. I like the idea of all of these games, but I just don’t know that I’d get them to the table. Have a look and see what you think.
