Thinkin’ About 2024’s Armies, Part 2: 40K Armies

With the new year approaching, and 12 fantastic months of hobbying to look forward to, I’ve turned my attention to having a think about what armies to work on in the coming year. I’ve split them up into three parts, focusing on “stock” or standard Age of Sigmar armies, converted Age of Sigmar armies, and Warhammer 40,000 armies.

The choices in these posts are based on projects that I have already, at some point over the years, already started. I’m keen for 2024 to be about finishing things I’ve already started, rather than focusing entirely on new things.

With that said, let’s jump into some of my options for armies in 2024. Today: 40K armies!

Genestealer Cults

I had intended to get the Genestealer Cults army done this year, but it’s clearly not happened. I’ve managed to get a few things done, but I’ve not really broken the back of the army. Here’s something I could build based on what I already have:

CHARACTERS

Abominant (75 points)
Acolyte Iconward (50 points)
Kelermorph (55 points)
Locus (45 points)
Nexos (60 points)
Patriarch (85 points)
Primus (90 points)
Primus (90 points)

BATTLELINE

10xAcolyte Hybrids (170 points)
20x Neophyte Hybrids (180 points)
20x Neophyte Hybrids (180 points)

DEDICATED TRANSPORTS

Goliath Truck (110 points)
Goliath Truck (110 points)

OTHER DATASHEETS

10x Aberrants (370 points)
Goliath Rockgrinder (155 points)
10x Purestrain Genestealers (170 points)

I’ve got a bit more than this, but this gives me an army that isn’t going to be all that effective, but which would be cool and varied, and would let me try out different things.

I like the colour scheme I’ve gone with, and I like the idea of the army. I’m just not sure this will be an absolute priority next year. There’s just so much to do, and I’m worried about the vehicles. I’m not confident in how I’d want to paint those.

Chaos Daemons

My Chaos Daemons were initially intended to be a Legion of the First Prince army for Age of Sigmar until that got firmly squatted by GW. Rather than abandon the project altogether, it seemed a better idea to shift it to a 40K army. I did so. Here’s a list I could work towards:

Chaos Daemons

CHARACTERS

Be’lakor (350 points)
Exalted Flamer (70 points)
Kairos Fateweaver (285 points)
Shalaxi Helbane (450 points)

BATTLELINE

10x Bloodletters (140 points)
10x Bloodletters (140 points)
10x Daemonettes (120 points)
10x Daemonettes (120 points)
10x Pink Horrors (140 points)

OTHER DATASHEETS

6x Flamers (160 points)

So, some of this is already done. Kairos, Be’Lakor, and the Pink Horrors are finished. I have the rest of the models that I would need, apart from Shalaxi. I’m going to go ahead and order her with a view to pushing through this army. It feels very doable. I’m likely to try to add some more daemons, too. I’ve already painted some Flesh Hounds, for example, and I’ve got a Bloodthirster sitting that I’d love to finish up.

I could see this army being a priority next year. It would give me a usable 40K force that I’m keen to use.

Necrons

The Necrons were initially a lockdown project for me, and I am still happy with how they look. I just haven’t really summoned up the will to play them. I think it’s because I don’t feel I really have the units I necessary want to use. With that in mind, it’s probably time to dive into phase 3 of the army to build some of these minis.

What do I have sitting that could be painted up for the army? Well, there’s a fair bit. I haven’t prepared a list, but here are some options:

  • Necron Warriors with Gauss Reapers (20-40 miniatures)
  • Szarekh, the Silent King (3 miniatures)
  • Ghost Arks (2 miniatures)
  • Technomancer (1 miniature)
  • Canoptek Doomstalkers (3 miniatures)
  • Chronomancer (1 miniature)
  • Triarch Stalker (1 miniature)
  • Triarch Praetorians (10 miniatures)

There are other minis that I’d be up for grabbing as well, but not until I manage to finish most of the rest of these. I like the idea of painting more Necrons, but will I really use them at the moment?

I think, that the Chaos Daemons are most likely to be done first, if I decide to do a 40K army. I’m excited for them. I love the models. They seem doable. I want to play them.

Next time, we’re round off these considerations with some converted Age of Sigmar armies. I hope to see you on Wednesday for that.
