5 on Friday 08/03/24

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Black Library releases an End Time omnibus – Whilst I know The End Times were a controversial chapter of Warhammer’s history, I liked the fact that they progressed the story. Oh, sure, they may have progressed it a bit too much, but it still represented a real event. I wasn’t hugely into Warhammer at the time, so I missed a lot of it. Then again, if more people were into Warhammer at the time, they probably wouldn’t have had to end it…

Zing.

Here’s a book:

This is one that I will likely grab. It’s a good catchup, and there are some really solid authors attached to the various novels and short stories that comprise this compilation.

Atomic Mass releases some Inquisitors for Star Wars: Legion –  I like the Inquisitors from Star Wars. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the stories they appear in, they often seems pretty ineffective. I like the concept, though. I also like the designs. Here are some new minis coming to Legion:

These looks really good… but have they been a bit ruined by the Shatterpoint minis.? These do look great, but compared to the Shatterpoint ones, they’re more than a little janky.

Renegade releases Blood-Stained Love, a supplement for Vampire: The Masquerade – Vampire, as a game, is sexy. I feel a bit cringey referring to an RPG like that; particularly on that I love. It is, though. This latest supplement dials that up, bringing in rules and ideas for romance into the game:

With romance-themed stories to run, somr NPCs, new character creation options, and advice on dealing with sensitive topics, this looks to be an interesting book. It seems more aimed at roleplay than crunchy rules, which is always a big plus for me.

Wyrd releases Ashes of Malifaux, a new expansion for M3E – I am very much enjoying this edition of Malifaux. It’s fantastic, and I’ve now painted up two crews (Leveticus and Jack Daw) and a bunch of accessories (scheme markers, other markers, and status tokens). Now, there’s a new supplement on the way:

In addition to advancing the story of Malifaux, there’sa bunch of new models being introduced. I love the Fumigator and the Leech King, but the coolest thing in here is Ezekiel and his undad Gremlins. They’re awesome.

The Army Painter to release a set of washes for their Fanatic paint range – The Army Painter continues to roll out their new Fanatic paint range. The latest offering is this spiffy box of washes:

The Fantatic range seems to be getting pretty solid reviews. Of course, so did the first wave of Speedpaints, but I think reviewers have learned their collective lessons since then. I’ll pick up some Fanatic at some point to try out. I’ll likely start with the metallics, but the washes are also tempting.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Slow Grow Challenge 2024: The Generals @ Woehammer – Month one of the slow grow is done! It feels good to be taking part alongside the folk producing all these other great characters. I’m looking forward to seeing next month’s offerings!

History Repeated @ The Giant Brain I picked up Oath. This review popped up and it’s pretty promising. i do share the author’s concern about the generational element making it difficult to bring in new players, but I’m currently trying to gather people to start a regular game.

Big Trees and Evil Fairies @ A Tabletop Gamer’s Diary how does this guy get through so many miniatures? His productivity is amazing, and they always look so great. The Sylvaneth range is amazing and he’s really done them justice.

Random TTRPG Thoughts #12 @ DM Tales This is just a fun, little post that I really enjoyed. I like the series of little, bite-sized thoughts that the author shares.

Heresy Demons @ A Loft Full of Lead I love Heresy. I have that middle Demon, and a bunch of their other models. I’ve got a poop/slug demon that I need to do at some point. It’s great to see minis from Heresy; especially when they’re nicely painted, as they are in this post.

There have been a few posts since my last 5 on Friday:

This has not been a good week for hobby! No progress has been made on the painting, but there’s been a fair bit of printing. I’ve pinted up 40 miniatures (20 Empire State Troops and 20 Chaos Dwarfs) that I am starting to worry I won’t be able to complete within the time limit for this month’s Slow Grow…

Painting, purchasing, and printing totals so far this year:

  • Purchased: 29 minis
  • Printed: 47 minis
  • Painted: 90 minis
