5 on Friday 15/03/24

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases Dawnbringers V: Shadow of the Crone – I’ve enjoyed the Dawnbringers series. They’ve most definitely not been all created equal, and there have been some books that have been far more useful and interesting than others. I think this one will be mid-range for me:

The big thing here is the set of siege rules and scenarios. Well, semi-siege really, with the Strongpoints. There’s also more 4-player fun, like in the past book. The problem, of course, with adding all of this cool stuff so close to the end of the edition is that you’ve not got all that long to use them before the new edition.

Z-Man Games releases Bridgerton edition of Love Letter –  I like Love Letter. There’s not rally enough going on to develop a dislike, if you know what I mean. It’s simple, nice, and quick. It’s also one that gets reskinned a lot. It’s in danger of becoming shovelware, really. Here’s another edition:

I suppose that if you’re going to reskin Love Letter, the Bridgerton is actually a pretty good property to use. Thematically, it works. It certainly makes a hell of a lot more sense than the Batman edition!

Onyx Path releases The Hedge supplement for Changeling: the Lost – It’s sad that Onyx Path’s releases for the Chronicles of Darkness appear to be drying up. I assume that Paradox is just not licensing stuff any more. It’s sad because Onyx Path has done more to keep the works of White Wolf alive than anyone else, including White Wolf. Here’s their latest offering:

I love both versions of Changeling. They offer such different tones, and I love the dark tone of The Lost. This is all about helping you set your adventures in the hedge. Look, let’s be honest; this is an Onyx Path book, It’s going to be a solid book for a solid game. Much hype!

Wyrd releases Iconic edition of Malifaux’s Seamus – Wyrd have been doing this for a while; putting out ‘iconic’ series miniatures. These are sets with a cool Malifaux miniature and a larger, scaled-up version. These are for collectors and painters, and now there’s a new entry in the series:

This is Seamus. He’s one of the original Malifaux masters, and one of Wyrd’s truly iconic characters. He’s based on Jack the Ripper and is portrayed here in an embrace with one of his poor, unfortunate victims. Fantastic mini!

Magpie Games to release Uncle Iroh’s Adventure Guide for the Avatar RPG – I’ve enjoyed the Avatar Legends RPG, and it even made it into this year’s Top 50 list. It was my first time playing a campaign using a PbtA game, too! Here’s a new supplement for the game:

Uncle Iroh! I’m new to Avatar as a franchise, and I’m not that far into the animated show. I did recently binge the new Netflix show, though. I loved it, and Iroh was by far the best bit. It helps that I also love the actor, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee. This Iroh-themed book has a bunch of new playbooks and adventures, some NPCs, and some setting info for Jasmine Island.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

2023 Behind-the-Scenes Stakeholder Report for Stonemaier Games @ Stonemaier Games – I enjoyed this post. I like when companies give a rundown of how things are going and what they’re up to. I appreciate the transparency and find it really interesting. Stonemaier is also a company for which I hold a lot of affection.

Acolyte Hybrids (part 3) @ Dreadaxe Games Gorgeous minis! I love the nice, deep purple on these guys. I enjoyed painting some of my own and it’s great to see others enjoying them, too!

New Year, Old Year: 2021 Revisited @ Space-Biff A nice retrospective from a reviewer that I really respect. I was drawn in by the mention of Oath, which I am hoping to play soon, but there are a lot of good recommendations here.

The Benefits of “The Hobby” in Warhammer Underworlds: Painting, Lore, and Beyond @ Spent Glory This is a fun post! It’s a great intro to the hobby side of things for the readers of this Underworld-centric blog. I certainly loved painting up my Underworlds warbands (1, 2, and 3) and it’s great to see others in that community diving into the hobby. This is a great primer-style post.

Review – Vampire: The Masquerade: Blood Sigils @ Before We Go Blog We featured this book in last week’s 5 on Friday. It’s a solid review. I expected it to be heavy on magic stuff, but I didn’t expect the level of drug-related content. That’s fine; it’s not something I’d shy away from in the World of Darkness. It just wasn’t what I thought it was.

There have been a few posts since my last 5 on Friday:

And we’re back on the horse with the hobbying! 20 Plague Monks brings me up to a mighty 110 miniatures for the year to date. I am working on more minis, some of which I hope to finish this weekend. I’m a tad worried about meeting my Slow Grow target for the month. I’ll be printing some more models for next month’s Slow Grow when I get a chance.

Painting, purchasing, and printing totals so far this year:

  • Purchased: 29 minis
  • Printed: 47 minis
  • Painted: 110 minis
