Feck All on Friday 05/04/24: Painting Queue

Mornin’ all!  I’ve been travelling for the past week and won’t be home until Monday.  5 on Friday is a difficult post to do on the go, largely due to the formatting and links.  It will return next week.

Instead, let’s talk about how we’re doing with painting and where we are going, and what I’d like to do.

First of all, I did cover the current slate in last week’s WiP Wednesday.  the most urgent of these items are the trio of Mancrusher Gargants.

These need to be finished for a tournament next weekend.  They will be pretty quuckly to finish up, so I’m not overly worried.  The previous ones didn’t take long.  I’m quite looking forward to fielding 12 of these lads!

One is actually a wee bit misprinted.  You can’t see it in the image above, and I didn’t notice until I sat down to start painting it.  The arm is strangely twisted and artifacted.  I’ve decided just to go with it and we’ll see how it turns out.  I’m pretty sure this list won’t be viable in 4th edition, so I’m not expecting these to be useful in the long term, anyway.

Next up, and as featured in the past few WiP Wednesday posts, I’ve got 20 Chaos Dwarfs to do.

These Infernal Guard have taken a fair while. They were meant to be part of March’s slow grow commitment, but that target has slipped.  Now, they will be joined by more Chaos Dwarfs for my April slow grow commitment.  I’ll be posting about those soon, along with my next month of Empire miniatures, following on from March’s halberdiers

Beyond the Mancrushers and my slow grow stuff, what are the other main projects I have on the go?  Well, there are a couple.

The one I’ve spent the most time on this year has been the Skaven of Clan Pestilens.

I’d like to finish these before 4th edition hits.  I’ve done a lot of minis and I only need another 12 done to finish the army as it currently stands.  These are some Plague Censer Bearers, a Plague Furnace, and Grey Seer Thanquol.

The other project that I’ve been picking away at is my army of Flesh-Eater Courts.  I love this army, but momentum has been patchy.  This year, I’ve done 21 miniatures for the army, on top of the 42 I had already done last year.

Next, I need to get some of the knights done.  I’ve got 18 Crypt Horrors to finish first.  These are currently sitting half-painted and wouldn’t take a huge push to finish.  After that, I’d likely try to finish some accompanying characters – at least a Crypt Haunter Courtier – before moving on to the units that I am trying to build.  Currently these are:

  • 40 Crypt Guard
  • 40 Crypt Ghouls
  • 9 Crypt Flayers
  • 18 Morbheg Knights
  • Nagash
  • Assorted Characters
  • Charnal Thrine Terrain Piece

Thinking about it now, I might actually try to finish Nahash first, even before the Crypt Horrors.

My reason being, Woehammer is running their hobby bingo cards over Discord this year and the final square I have is a Warmaster.  He’d fit the bill quite nicely and complete my card.

What else are we looking at for this year?  I suppose the Chaos Daemons are worth a look.  If I can finish then off, I can have a usable 40K army.  I was thinking something like this:

Daemon Draft (1965 points)

Chaos Daemons
Strike Force (2000 points)
Daemonic Incursion

To get this list painted, I’d need to complete quite a few minis.  The 20 Bloodletters have been painted red and now need details picked out.  The Daemonettes have been primed, and I’ve done the skin on a couple of then as tests.  The Flamers, likewise, have been primed.  The Nurglings are partially done, too.  The Flamers and Nurglings, handily, will also be useful for my Age of Sigmar Disciples of Tzeentch and Maggotkin of Nurgle, respectively.

Beyond the worlds of Warhammer, I’d like to paint up a second crew for Stargrave, following on from my Saurian Starhost.  I’ll becusing one of the Stargrave boxed sets for this, and I have already printed off a bunch of bases to go with them.  This would give me my second starter force for Stargrave and put me closer to finishing one of my resolutions.  I’m not sure what other skirmish game I am going to build for.  Perhaps an Osprey game such as Dracula’s America, Zona Alfa, Burrows & Badgers, Reality’s Edge, or Kobolds & Cobblestones?  We’ll see.

I’d also like to get another Malifaux crew painted up in the near future.  I started putting down skintone on Tiri’s crew, which really appeals to me.

I’m a wee bit trepidatious about some of my resolutions at this point.  4 full armies might have been a bit much.  I can see two definitely getting done with the Skaven and enough points of my Flesh-Eater Courts.  I could probably manage the Daemons, too.  The fourth is a concern.  SoulblightGoblin junkers/raceway?  Expand one of my TOW slow grow armies?  Who knows?
