5 on Friday 03/05/24

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

The Black Library releases the paperback edition of The End and the Death Volume II – When I saw this on the release list, I initially assumed that it was actually the paperback for Volume III, which was released in hardback earlier this year. I was wrong, it’s Volume II:

I guess that the lag between the hardback and paperback edition of these books is bigger than I expected! I do wonder, with the Horus Heresy series finished, if we’ll see a ramping up of other material from Black Library, or a reduction. This has been such a focus of BL for so long, after all.

Road to Infamy releases Canvas Big Box on Kickstarter –  I need to play Canvas! I nearly got to play it at a recent open day, but a visitor then asked to play Root, so I had to oblige. I had not heard of Canvas until that day, but just looking at the game and the components, I was taken aback by how gorgeous it looks:

This big box edition looks fantastic. You’ve got a beautiful game, some expansions, and then this fantastic, unique box that takes the form of a chest of drawers. I love it! The all-in pledge is so tempting…

Mongoose Publishing releases This is Free Trader Beowulf, a history of Traveller – This is a Traveller book, but not in the usual sense of the books we feature here. Rather than being a supplement to or rulebook for the RPG, this is a history of the venerable sci-fi game:

This is almost 300 pages of stories and history about Traveller. There’s a real pedigree here as well, with it coming from the same author as the fantastic Designers & Dragons, a history of the RPG, generally.

Highlands Miniatures launches Fillers and Heroes campaign on MMF Frontiers – I really like Highlands Miniatures. They’re a really solid company that puts of some very fine STLs. Many of my Flesh-Eater Courts minis have come from them. They currently have a campaign up on MyMiniFactory Frontiers:

I think these miniatures will be really useful to me. There’s a whole bunch of characters that I can convert to fir into my army. There’s also the nice ‘unit fillers’ which give models that might be good for basing, for making interesting characters, or as terrain. Good stuff!

Atomic Mass Games releases Gwenom and Scarlet Spider for Marvel Crisis Protocol – As a game, Crisis Protocol does appeal to me. This is especially true when they release excellent models like the Gwenom miniature, as shown below:

What a cool, characterful, dynamic miniature! There are so many fantastic minis in this line. I do worry about what’s going to happen to Atomic Mass Game and their miniature lines with the changes at the now-debt-laden Asmodee…

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Marvel Crisis Protocol video battle report: Inhumans vs Wakanda @ The Bovine Overlord – More battle reports should feature Scottish accents. It’s how things are meant to sound. Good video; I very much enjoyed it!

The path to Conquest @ Pile of Dice I like this sort of post, where people consider or plan for new armies. I like reading about the process of picking, whether for aesthetic, gameplay, or logistical reasons. Conquest is also a game that intrigues me!

New to Me – April 2024 @ Dude! Take Your Turn! A couple of interesting games, here. Glass Road is one that I nearly bought a few times over the years. It’s always looked pretty good, but never quite top of my list. Skyrise seems interesting, and production-wise it looks really cool!

On Call of Cthulhu @ LunarShadow Designs As someone who has, done a few one-shots and two-shots of Call of Cthulhu and would love to do a campaign, it’s interesting to read this writeup from someone who had previously done some one-shots and two-shots and is now finishing up their first campaign. some interesting observations here, both on the rules, and the setup of their campaign and group. A good read.

Achilles Ridgerunner @ Dreadaxe Games I have mixed feeling looking at this post. On the plus side, this is a gorgeous Ridgerunner. It looks great; well done! The downside is that this makes me feel very guilty about the state of my own GSC. I appreciate that this is very much a me problem and it’s on the author!

There have been a few posts since my last 5 on Friday:

I’m actually really happy with this week’s blog content. It’s been a good week on that front.

On the painting front, it’s not been so great. No progress. There were also no prints nor purchases, but I do need to get some prints done soon.

Painting, purchasing, and printing totals so far this year:

  • Purchased: 29 minis
  • Printed: 77 minis
  • Painted: 158 minis
