5 on Friday 05/07/24

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases Skaventide, the launch box for Age of Sigmar’s fourth edition – How could I feature anything else? This is the launch box for the latest edition of the bestest miniatures game currently published by Games Workshop:

There are a ton of awesome books and miniatures in here. They’re going to really hurt my abilty to maintain a good ratio of purchases/prints to painted minis. I’m so excited to get my hands on this. I’ll paint the Skaven, though not immediately, but it’s books I’m most excited for.

Kabuki Kaiser releases OSR supplement, Oh My Lost Darklords –  I was excited to see this appear at DTRPG, because I really enjoyed the last Kabuki Kaiser book I read.

This one is a fantasy-themed offering, and is intended for use with Old-School Essentials or other OSR games. It promises a bunch of classes for evil and/or chaotic campaigns. From the preview, it seems to share the same, clean layouts as Dark Space. I’d be keen to take a flip through this one!

Atomic Mass releases a new Shatterpoint pack, This is Some Rescue – I know I previously said that I’m not the biggest fan of overly-specific sets for Shatterpoint, but I do like this one. I like it a lot!

You’ve got your iconic Leia and Chewbacca miniatures, and some cool variants for Luke and Han. The Stormtrooper armour looks great, and the set is so evocative of A New Hope. Lovely!

Hobby Dungeon Games releases volume 2 of their annual One Page Game Jam – A tone is definitely set by the first game in this collection. It is called Sockfull of Lead and it involve placing a miniature into a sock and smashing it against an opponent’s miniature-laden sock until something gives out. There’s definitely a punk feel to the whole thing:

Other games are somewhat less… destructive. They’d have to be. Personally, I like the looks of Barfly, Diaries of a Teenage Superhero, Bastards & Blessings, Hunt28, Nuclear Democracy, and What the Hell is That Thing!

Hasbro releases the 5th edition of Talisman – Talisman is a classic board game, originally created and published by Games Workshop. It has since been licensed out to others, including Fantasy Flight Games. Now, Hasbro have released a 5th edition of the game:

Fundamentally, it will be the same as previous editions. Certainly, the board looks pretty similar. No doubt it will be followed by the usual spate of expansions, too. We’ll see the city, the highlands, and so on. The game can be fun. It’s very random, so it’s not a game that you can really count on winning through pure wits or strategy. For what it is, I like it. I just don’t see it making it to the table all that often. Still, it definitely has a place in my collection, and I’ve spent a lot of time in the past few weeks playing the digital edition.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Launching Our Spearhead Hobby Challenge @ Plastic Craic – As I previously flagged up, the Plastic Craic blog is running a Spearhead Hobby Challenge. I’m really looking forward to seeing what comes of it. I’m going to be talking about my own plans for it on Wednesday of next week.

New to Me – June 2024 @ Dude! Take Your Turn! Shipyard looks really interesting, and I like how it’s presented. Ezra & Nehemiah is particularly appealing to me as I fall deeper into the cult of Garphill. This is a good writeup that highlights some pretty cool games.

How Long Should a New Player Stick to Rivals Format? @ Spent Glory Having recently finished up an Underworlds league at our local club, it seems that the game is sticking around for us. People have been challenging one another and playing at least every second week. That’s a lot more play than it was previously seeing. This is a nice article that I’ll probably forward to some of the folks who are really getting into the game as a next-step kind of thing.

Android Netrunner: The Future is Now @ Spalanz I loved Netrunner when it first came out, but with the cancellation, I find myself with a semi-completed set that I don’t really know what to do with. The alt cards do seem interesting, but I just don’t know that I’m going to put the time in to put them together; especially when I don’t really have anyone else who was super interested in the game. It’s a solid classic, though!

What About Our Treasures… @ Torg’s Blog This is a really thoughtful, impactful post that definitely catches you in the feels and prompts some reflection.

*  *  *

There have been a few posts since my last 5 on Friday:

10 Flagellants were completed. With that, the last of my slow grow commitments for the Empire army are fulfilled. I’ll do just 2 more minis, though. The Chaos Dwarfs still need done, too.

No purchases. Not yet. Just wait until that Skaventide box drops, though… oh, dear.

Painting, purchasing, and printing totals so far this year:

  • Purchased: 37 minis
  • Printed: 113 minis
  • Painted: 239 minis
