5 on Friday 09/08/24

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases a double-pack of Knights for Horus Heresy and 40K – I’ve been looking at a lot of Chaos Knights lately. I’ve bought too many of the damn things. Now, Games Workshop is tempting me with more? More?

I do like the Cerastus Knights, and I’d hop on this bundle if I didn’t already have a Lancer in addition to a whole bunch of the regular Knights. I’ve already got more than I’ll use, basically. Still, nice bundle, this.

Corvus Belli releases rulebook for Warcrow –  Corvus Belli are known for their sci-fi miniatures game, Infinity. It’s a solid game, if sometimes a tad fiddly. Now, they’re throwing their collective hats into the fantasy genre with Warcrow:

I’m not a huge fan of the name, honestly. It just makes me think of the Birds of War:

Needs a Fight Milk powerup, doesn’t it?

The game looks interesting and the minis look fantastic. I link to a review later in this post, so make sure to take a look.

Free League releases Moria Supplement for The One Ring – You can always count on Free League to produce truly beautiful books. The Lord of the Rings is a great property for them to have, as it gives so much opportunity for gorgeous artwork and design. Just look at this stunning, elegant cover:

Honestly, I’m not the biggest fan of Tolkien, but I can appreciate that he is an undisputed master of world-building, and it’s great to see Free League drawing on and celebrating that.

Leder Games taking preorders for Arcs – Arcs has been met with some real hype from our local gaming group. We can’t wait to break into it, and those who backed it on Kickstarter already have their copies. I’m waiting for my preorder.

We’re full converts to the cults of both Leder Games and Cole Wehrle. Root is one of our favourites, I recently bought Pax Pamir, and Ahoy has been getting a fair bit of play. Hype!

Free League releases Moria supplement for The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying – Okay, so you might be getting a bit of deja vu, here. It’s a Moria-themed supplement by Free League:

There are actually two parallel RPG lines based on The Lord of the Rings. The One Ring, which was featured above, uses its own set of rules. The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying uses the 5E D&D ruleset. I think it’s telling that the non-5E book has the more interesting, more elegant cover, eh?

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Warcrow – Winds from the North – Review and Unboxing @ Sprues & Brews Warcrow looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun, and I love the minis. Those Orcs are especially tasty. I trust Corvus Belli to make stunning miniatures and good (if slightly crunchy) rules. I’m wanting to try something new (with MCP and Shatterpoint being the biggest current temptations) and this review makes me wonder if that newness is going to be Warcrow…

July 2024 Gaming @ Dude! Take Your Turn! As is usual, most of the games here are ones that I have not played, except for Century, Terraforming Mars, and Architects of the Western Kingdom. Ezra & Nehemiah looks interesting, and one that I’d like to try. Combat Commander remains one that I am perennially interested in, but which I know I would struggle to get to the table.

Itch.io Needs to Introduce Revenue Sharing @ Cannibal Halfling Gaming I’ve only used Itch.io a few times. My most recent purchase was, I believe, a one-page RPG based on the song, Jolene, by Dolly Parton. Don’t judge; it’s cool. This article is really interesting, appraising the functionality of the site, and some needed improvements to bring it up to date and foster the indie creator community that it seems to seek.

QuikReview: Deadpool & Wolverine @ Riders of Skaith I enjoyed this review. This movie does seem massively hyped for yet another superhero movie. I welcome some healthy snark.

REVIEW: Eat the Reich @ Taskerland I’m disappointed to read this review. I’m a huge fan of Grant Howitt and his games, but this one does not seem to quite hit the mark. The issues that the reviewer highlighted would mostly be of concern to me as well. I do disagree on the aesthetic, though. Whilst this reviewer did not like how the book is presented, I really quite like that aspect.

It’s been a few weeks since my last 5 on Friday as I’ve been travelling. A lot of posts have gone up in the meantime! I’m pretty happy with what I managed to queue up, and actually had to push some posts back repeatedly! Here’s what’s been going on:

That means that since my last 5 on Friday, I’ve painted 25 miniatures. I’ve bought a couple of miniatures for the FEC army when I was away, and one more mini that I grabbed on the way home.

I’ve not settled back into hobbying since being back this week. There’s plenty on the slate, though! I’ve started by priming the Spearhead terrain pieces.

Painting, purchasing, and printing totals so far this year:

  • Purchased: 114 minis
  • Printed: 115 minis
  • Painted: 273 minis
