5 on Friday 16/08/24

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases a new Imperial Agents codex for Warhammer 40,000 – The best thing about 40K is the strange stuff, and the Imperial Agents are full of that! There’s a lot of cool stuff in this book.

I love Inquisitors and their henchmen, but i don’t see this getting much play. Seemingly, it’s not competitive, and since 40K players are drones, that’s enough to write off most of it. Still cool, though!

Good Games Publishing releases Star Tycoon –  I don’t know much about this game, but it’s running a business in space. It seems like it should be right up my street, y’know?

The game is beautifully presented, with lovely art and components. From watching a playthrough, it looks like it strikes a good balance of complexity and agency. There are important decisions to be made, but it’s not too heavy and really does seem quite approachable. Worth a look!

Cubicle 7 releases Ruins of the Past supplement for Soulbound – Soulbound is really an excellent game, and a great source of material and backgorund on the Mortal Realms, the setting for Warhammer: Age of Sigmar. It’s great to see more supplements coming out for it:

This is a good old fashioned trasure hunting supplement! It’s also got a bit of a focus on the Ossiarch Bonereapers, so that’s a cool, new angle for the RPG. Cubicle 7 have been consistently on-point with these supplements, so long may it continue.

Days of Wonder releases the 8th map pack for Ticket to Ride; Iberia and South Korea – Ticket to Ride is a great game. There’s not much to it, but it’s a nice experience. Until we held a club event last year where we played a full day of TTR, I hadn’t got around to trying the map packs. I’m glad I got that chance, as I really enjoyed playing on some new maps with some new twists.

This latest offering focuses on the Iberian peninsula, but also includes a map of South Korea on the other side of the board. The interesting addition to this version is the inclusion of festival cities and festival cards, adding another favourful dimension to your routes.

Corvus Belli releases Winds from the North starter set for Warcrow – last week we featured the Warcrow rulebook that Corvus Belli is putting out. This week, it’s the Winds of the North Battle Pack:

This is a 2-player starter set with some truly stunning miniatures. Were I to grab this set, I’d be all over them Orcs. As things stand, I am resisting!

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Frostgrave Battle Report: The Worm Hunts @ Scott’s Game Room This is a fun, little battle report. Lovely minis, nice terrain. What’s not to love?

Marvel Crisis Protocol: four months on @ Spalanz This is a lovely writeup of the author’s progress with MCP. I agree with him that one of the really appealing things about the game to me is also the listbuilding. The idea of trying new stuff, tweaking it, chopping and changing. Good for the soul; bad for the wallet!

Invention and Innovation in TTRPGs @ Cannibal Halfling Gaming This is a long and thoughtful post about the state of innovation in the hobby. It feels prety timely, given the glut of 5E-based products taking us in a more homogenous direction. I also agree on being lukewarm on virtual tabletops. They can work really well, but they do leave me a bit cold.

Painted Chief Chirpa @ The Bovine Overlord Ewok! I maintain that the Ewok sets are the coolest released for Shatterpoint. It’s great to see them getting painted up!

My Favorite Wargame Cards – A Look at Individual Cards from My Favorite Games – Card #7: Augmented Reality from 2040: An American Insurgency from Compass Games @ The Players’ Aid – This grabbed my attention largely due to the similarities in name and theme to a novel I recently read. Reading over this writeup, I’m really curious to play it, even with the caveats about the game being far from perfect. It looks really interesting.

There have been a few posts since my last 5 on Friday:

4 new miniatures got added to the painted pile this week. That feels good! They were terrain pieces, too. That’s unusual for me. I’ve also built the two dragons that I picked up on holiday and am looking at basing for them.

I did buy 7 miniatures, though; all Malifaux for a cool, thematic little warband that I’m going to keep under my hat for now.

Painting, purchasing, and printing totals so far this year:

  • Purchased: 121 minis
  • Printed: 115 minis
  • Painted: 277 minis
