5 on Friday 30/08/24

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases a new army set for the Blood Angels – Games Workshop’s latest codex and accompanying army box is for the Blood Angels chapter of Space Marines:

I mean, okay? It’s Space Marines. I guess these ones get painted red? Sometimes black? I know the new Sanguinary Guard have been controversial, but I like them. So, there.

GMT Games releases 25th anniversary edition of For the People –  For the People pits Lincoln against Davis in the prosecution of the US Civil War. This anniversary edition is a reprint with a newly redesigned map:

The map is actually really pretty, and the game seems solid. It looks on the heavy side, but I’m really only going at a glance there. I do like a 2 player war game, so it might be worth a look… but then so many of my GMT Games titles are still languishing on the shelf for a lack of interested players.

TTCombat releases Kaylessa Sandweaver for Half Tilt – okay, see, this is what I was hoping for last week when I said that Half Tilt would become more interesting as TTCombat released little crews and characters to go alongside it:

I’m actually a lot more interested in this game, now that I’m seeing some interesting models, beyond the slightly bland ones that have been packaged into the core box. The same happened with Rumbleslam.

R. Talsorian Games releases a starter set for their RPG, Shadow Scar – R. Talsorian Games is best known for their Cyberpunk franchise, as well as their licensed The Witcher RPG.  They have recently released a new game using a new IP:

Shadow Scar is a multiverse-spanning game that sees players step into the Mosiac and enter the Shadow Scar Agency as you begin your journey through a multiverse threatened by unseen Yokai. I’m not sold on this art style, though.

Fantasy Flight Games releases a Clone Wars edition of the Star Wars Deckbuilding Game – The Star Wars Deckbuilding Game has been out for some time and was pretty well received.  Now, a need version is available which moves the fight from the Galactic Civil War to the Clone Wars:

Having not played the original, I don’t know a huge amount about the gameplay.  I hope and expect that, like the original, the cards all feature art based on the movies and TV shows, rather than stills taken from them; I’ve never been a huge fan of games using movie stills in lieu of art.  I’m pretty confident this will be art, though.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Silver Bayonet: Prussians @ Wyrd Stones and Tackle Zones Silver Bayonet looks so fun. I love the concept, and the miniatures are cool. I’ve seen it pop up a lot recently, with some coverage at Woehammer, as well. The minis in this post look great!

Commander decklist: Party business @ Scent of a Gamer Oh, Xenagos seems really cool. I’ve been looking at big creatures and whatnot to use with some other commanders, such as Ruric Thar. This list looks fun.

Three Blood Angels Successor Chapter Contrast Painting Recipe Guides – How Knot To Paint @ Vincent Knotley’s Hobby Blog Now, obviously Flesh Tearers are best tearers, but I also really like that blue/turquoise scheme. Gorgeous, innit?

My Love Language is Precons @ Beats and Skies Dinosaurs! So many cool dino decks! Also, this is about Arena, which I’ve only just started to play. Fantastic!

Daemon Prince of Nurgle @ Calixis Crusade I love this. It manages to capture the Bretonnian feel, the Nurgle feel, and just an absurd amount of creepiness. This is truly, truly excellent.

There have been a few posts since my last 5 on Friday:

We took in a new affiliate this week, with Big Orbit Cards joining the gang to coincide with our new coverage of Magic: the Gathering!

Nothing painted, nothing bought, and nothing printed (well, nothing for me) this month.

Painting, purchasing, and printing totals so far this year:

  • Purchased: 121 minis
  • Printed: 115 minis
  • Painted: 277 minis
