5 on Friday 11/10/24

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases the GSC Benefictus for Warhammer 40,000 – I had such intentions with my Genestealer Cults. Such intentions! I just keep forgetting the huge number of minis that are needed, and the fact that the current version of 40K just isn’t all that engaging. Still, the newest miniature for army looks great:

Big-brain Benefictus looks fantastic. It really captures the strangeness that should be a key feature of the Genestealer Cults. If and when I return to this army, I’ll be adding some big-brain brethren!

Cubicle 7 releases a Dwarf Player’s Guide for Warhammer Fantasy Role-Play –  In my own self-deprecating way, I often describe RPGs to curious acquaintances as “I sit at a table with friends and pretend to be a dwarf.” Now, Cubicle 7 wants to help me do this:

There’s a whole lot of content here. We’ve got background and history, new career options, a bunch of weapons and equipment, and the all-important runes. Were I looking to play a Dwarf in this game, I’d be all over the Runesmith career!

Atomic Mass Games releases the What Have We Here Squad Pack for Shatterpoint – There are a whole bunch of really cool releases coming for Shatterpoint. The latest offering features the legendary raconteur, Lando Calrissian:

Now, Lando looks great. Of course, he does. The rest of the set, though? It’s a bit boring, isn’t it? I think this might be the first set that really looks properly boring to me. Again, Lando is great, but I’m just not feeling the set as a whole.

Trick or Treat Studios releases a new Chucky board game – I get that it’s spooky season, but this still feels like a bit of a random release? Is there a new Chucky movie coming out? A cursory Google search suggests not…

Looking at the Trick or Treat site, it actually makes a lot of sense. This is their thing. I can respect a company that knows its lane and stays in it. I’m not sure this is for me, but it’s really cool to see all of the classic horror movie-themed games that Trick or Treat has been quietly putting out.

Repos Productions releases a Lord of the Rings edition of 7 Wonders Duel – 7 Wonders Duel has sat on my shelf for a fair while, unplayed. Now, Repos Productions have reskinned it using Asmodee’s license to Tolkien’s works:

7 Wonders is a solid system. It works, and it’s been hugely successful. This reimplementation is really quite gorgeous, and it applies a nice, appropriate, and popular theme. What’s not to like?

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Best 3 Games with…Robin Hood! @ The Players’ Aid I enjoyed Ivanhoe when I read it. The character of Robin of Sherwood is an enduring one, and it’s great that it’s spawned so much media, including board games. The Gest of Robin Hood is featured in this post, and it’s definitely a tempting prospect! Sheriff of Nottingham is a good game, too.

Marvel Crisis Protocol tournament report: Spooktacular October! 05Oct2024 @ The Bovine Overlord I like the blog’s event writeups. They always make the games sound a lot of fun, and there are always plenty of great pictures. It looks like this was a very fun event with a whole bunch of beautifully painted minis.

Once upon a Wednesday: Desert Tablescapes @ Scent of a Gamer I got one of these boards. Mine is a cobbled street. It’s a purchase I regret. As this post explains, they are so late and they were immediately replaced by the fantastic neoprene mats. My board has barely left the box.

New edition of Warhammer Underworlds – What does it mean? @ Handful of Dice Underworlds is a good game, and it’s getting a big revamp. This is a good rundown of what’s been revealed so far, and a bit of speculation on the implications.

Da War Squig @ Imperial Rebel Ork Orks done right! They’re such a (small-c) chaotic force that conversions and custom vehicles are utterly at home in such a force. These ones look great.

There have been a few posts since my last 5 on Friday:

This week saw another 3 completed miniatures and no purchases or prints,

Painting, purchasing, and printing totals so far this year:

  • Purchased: 121 minis
  • Printed: 116 minis
  • Painted: 288 minis

  1. You’re always so kind, and I always feel so honoured to get a mention on 5 On Friday. Now I just need to convince you to start playing MCP too 😊

I do really like the look of that Lando Calrissian box for Shatterpoint. Having the un-named characters be a little dull is probably not totally unexpected as the game is really about the heroes doing cool things while a bunch of no-name nobodies get smited on the way. Did you ever try playing it yet? I live it quite a lot.
