5 on Friday 01/11/24

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases a battle group for the Mechanicum in Legions Imperialis – This might be one of the first things that GW has put out for LI that really has me tempted to dive in. Their ad-mech range for this game is excellent, with lots of cool troops, robots, tanks, and more:

This box looks like a really solid place to start, too. There’s a lot stuff in here and the price is reasonable for what you’re getting, too. Gorgeous!

Mongoose releases Traders and Gunboats supplement for Traveller –  Mongoose’s traveller line continues to be excellent. A little extensive, perhaps, and a bit pricey when it comes to PDF, but excellent nonetheless. Their latest offering is the supplement, Traders and Gunboats:

Promising 70 new ships, this is some cool content. There’s something just really cool at looking at lots of different ship types and finding something that fits your tastes or your group’s needs. This looks like it will be a really cool supplement.

Atomic Mass Games releases the Maximum Power squad pack for Star Wars: Shatterpoint – It’s an odder choice for a set, this one. Veers isn’t really someone who would necessarily expect to be in hand to hand combat, being that he normally seems to command from the comfort of an AT-AT, but he’s made his way to Shatterpoint:

I really like his mini. It’s simple, but characterful, recognisable with the iconic helmet. I also really, really love the Snow Troopers. They look absolutely fantastic at this scale!

Rio Grande Games releases Rising Sun for the second edition of Dominion – Dominion is a perennial favourite of mine. I love the structure of it, making it a bit more rigid than the typical deckbuilder. Here is yet another expansion:

This is seemingly the 16th expansion to Dominion. Wow. There’s so much of this game. I have a few expansions, but didn’t make the jump to second edition. I love that it’s still going strong.

Atomic Mass Games releases Abomination and Wrecking Crew for Marvel Crisis Protocol – In addition to their sterling work on the Shatterpoint line, Atomic mass also continue to hit it out of the park with their Crisis Protocol line:

Now, the big guy looks great, but what I really love is the Wrecking Crew! I like the multi-based miniatures from this line, and these guys are some of the best they’ve done. Fantastic!

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Da Brick @ Imperial Rebel Ork Amazing! This is what Orky conversions should be. Grab something cool and make it orky. Love it!

Editorial: Why Fallout Wasteland Warfare Needs a Second Edition @ Kuribo’s Painting I really enjoyed this post, and it totally hit the nail on the head for me. I love the idea of the fallout game, but it feels a bit sprawling and intimidating to start with. I have favourite minis from the line, but don’t know where they fit in supplement-wise, and I’m not keen on picking up lots of books. Wasteland Warfare does look good, but the narrative feel of the original game is more what I want.

Wargame Review: The Silver Bayonet @ Woehammer I’ve seen a lot of coverage of this game recently; it seems to have garnered some real traction. This is a short, positive review that includes some cool pics of painted minis and a link to an example game. Worth a read to whet your appetite for a very interesting skirmish game.

Da Mek Shop @ Convert or Die I’ve always loved the Mek Shop terrain piece, and Orky terrain more generally. it looks great here, resplendent in a fantastic paintjob!

Warmachine | Two Player Starter Set Review & Unboxing @ Sprues & Brews I am still doubtful about Steam Forged Games and their takeover of Warmachine and Hordes. I just don’t have a lot of faith in the company based on their track record. That said, they seem to be off to a good start, and I can feel a bit of goodwill towards them. I hope they keep this up and don’t resort to their old, lazy, cynical, shovelware-peddling ways. Also, got on to Hordes, yo! It’s way cooler!

It’s been a couple of weeks since my last 5 on Friday, so there have been a fair few posts since then:

No painting, but also no new miniatures purchased or printed.

Painting, purchasing, and printing totals so far this year:

  • Purchased: 121 minis
  • Printed: 116 minis
  • Painted: 288 minis

  1. Thank you for your kind words on the article. I’m glad to hear you enjoyed it and Fallout is worth the effort to play, you just have to figure out what flavor of it fits your interests best.

  2. Cheers for the shout out – and thank you for doing these articles. I don’t often manage to comment but I always read them, great way to catch things that I’d otherwise have missed.
