5 on Friday 08/11/24

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases Embergard; a new edition of Warhammer Underworlds – Underworlds has been a perennial favourite at our club. It gets a lot of love. Now, Games Workshop are releasing a new edition with big changes:

I’ve not really been following the news and previews around the upcoming release. The bigger Underworld fans at club are excited, though. And the miniatures, as ever, are stunning.

Wizards of the Coast to release Jumpstart Booster box for MTG’s Foundations set –  I maintain that an event I’d love to run locally for our club is not yet another 40K tournament, or even a Commander event, but rather a Jumpstart day.

I love the prospect of this format. Grab two big boosters and mash them together into a deck? Sure, sounds fun! I was already looking at the format before realising that WotC was putting out a Jumpstart Booster Box to go with the Foundations set!

Corvus Belli releases Black Legion Officers for Warcrow – Warcrow kind of dipped out of sight for me after the release. It’s grabbed my attention back with these truly stunning new miniatures:

It should have been obvious, of course, that Corvus Belli would produce wonderful fantasy miniatures, just as they produce amazing sci-fi ones. These latest offerings rival, if not beat, anything that the company has produced for Infinity.

One Seven releases Deep Cuts, an expansion for Blades in the Dark – Blades in the Dark is a fantastic game that is held in justifiably high esteem. John Harper has recently put out a new expansion for it in the form of Deep Cuts:

There’s a whole bunch of new content in here. You get loads of new options for your characters, including new backgrounds and heritages, and a lot of new factions to interact with. There are also the new catalysts; big, worldwide events that expand and change a setting. This looks to be an expansion that brings more of the same to people happy with the game, and new features for those looking to explore. It’s a good balance, that.

Wyrd Games releases Boilermaker miniature for Malifaux – Malifaux! It’s always cool to see new Malifaux models. I’ve got a really affection for the haphazard mechanical miniatures from this line, and the Boilermaker looks really fantastic:

I do like the Foundry keyword. Mei Feng is a cool master, and this particular mechanical beastie would be well at home with her and her cronies. Long may Wyrd keep working on this range!

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Commander decklist: Hylophobia @ Scent of a Gamer I love the deck list posts from this blog, generally, but this one really grabbed my attention. This is because before before I settled on building my current Frog and Cat decks, I was really keen on building around Doran, the Siege Tower. It’s interesting, therefore, to read how a more experienced player builds it out!

Domina 3D Printed Ruins @ A Loft Full of Lead Between the printing and the paint job, these look ace! Time to share the wash recipe, perhaps? Eh? Eh?

Orctober 2024 – Da Big Round Up @ Convert or Die What a lovely selection of Greenskins! It’s always great at this time of year to watch people really embrace the bestest factions in the various worlds of Warhammer.

New to Me – October 2024 @ Dude! Take Your Turn! I’m not sure that any of these games are ones that I’m going to rush to buy, but I really enjoy this monthly post, and this one is as interesting as ever. If anything, I’m grateful that these perhaps don’t appeal to me, personally, as I’ve been tempted before by this author’s posts and endorsements!

Daily miniature: Sue @ Scent of a Gamer I usually try to avoid including multiple posts from the same blog, but this one grabbed my attention. I love Malifaux’s Sue character, with both the newer and older models being really fantastic. This is the older one, and he looks excellent.

  1. Thanks for the link back! November’s post is going to be quite long, since I had a convention this past weekend. Not sure if any of them will appeal, but I hope so!
