5 on Friday 15/11/24

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases 2024’s Christmas Red Gobbo miniature – Another November rolls around and another Red Gobbo appears, courtesy of James Workshop and his little elves. Aelves? Who knows…

This is my favourite Christmas Red Gobbo to date. I love all the details, the snowballs, the baubles, the little helper… and the snowman. Snowman is the new crab!

Cubicle 7 releases Mortar & Pestle supplement for 5E D&D –  Potions! Elixirs! mixtures! Tinctures! Brews! Blendings! Uh… bottles? Yeah, we got all that good stuff in here:

Cubicle 7, in addition to their other fine lines, also does some 5E content! Here’s a great book about brewing various liquids with a number of interesting, powerful, and potentially dangerous properties. It looks like a fun, tightly-focused book by a proven publisher.

Renegade Game Studios releases a 30th-anniversary edition of Robo Rally – Originally released in 1994, Robo Rally is Richard Garfield’s game of chaotic robot racing. Now, Renegade Game Studios is putting out a special edition for its 30th anniversary:

This edition, although quite pricey, comes with deluxe components. It’s also been expanded to play 8 players. Including this in the core set makes sense when this is a limited release. It’s a celebratory edition and will not be in print for long.

Amalia Leili Seren Vals and Miguel Marques da Silva release Sabbat: The Schism, a sourcebook for Vampire: The Masquerade – This is a massive tome. Weighing in at over 700 pages, there’s just a huge amount of content:

With a lot of background/lore, also comes a whole bunch of rules. There are new Loresheets, updated disciplines, new rituals and ceremonies, and more. I’m especially interested in the new bloodline loresheets and the new Metamorphose discipline..

Beyond Cataclysm Games launches Kickstarter campaign for Mork Org – Do we really need an office-based edition of Mork Borg? Is it really a gap that the market has been crying out for? Yes. Of course.

I love it when the fantastical and/or the horrific meets the mundane! This game looks to mythologise the minor horrors of corporate life and I am all about that. This is an exciting project!

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Talking About Games: To Talk or Not @ Space-Biff Some interesting and well-reasoned thoughts on how to decide what to write about and what to put aside. As someone who likes to maintain positivity around here, this is something I put some thought into as well, and it’s interesting to read other folks’ reasoning behind their blog curation.

Daily Commander: Feldon of the Third Path @ J.M. Casual Blog As someone enjoying some blue/green self-mill at the moment, the prospect of some red graveyard play seems fun. I love blog posts like this that teach me about cards that I had not encountered before.

OPR Devourers vs Empire @ A Loft Full of Lead I really like my first games of OPR, and it’s fun to read about other folk taking the plunge as well. Lovely pics, and I’m glad they enjoyed the game.

October 2024: A Month in Plastic @ Plastic Craic I enjoy a post that begins with the tears of Lumineth players. This is a nice summary of the Plastic Craic blog, Patreon, and Discord for last month. I do love this crew!

ASOIAF TMG: Lannister – The Mountain’s Men @ Azazel’s Bitzbox You know, ASOIAF is not a range that I feel a real compulsion to own, paint or play, but I do like seeing the miniatures beautifully painted and ranked up. These guys look fantastic, though I agree with the author that I’d have liked a slightly more brutish look.

There have been a few posts since my last 5 on Friday:

No painting, but also no new miniatures purchased or printed.

Painting, purchasing, and printing totals so far this year:

  • Purchased: 121 minis
  • Printed: 116 minis
  • Painted: 288 minis

  1. What a fun roundup! I’m particularly excited about the new Christmas Red Gobbo—those details sound delightful! It’s always fascinating to see how these miniatures evolve each year. The Mork Borg office edition also sounds like a hilarious twist on corporate life; it’s creative concepts like that which keep the hobby fresh and engaging! Thanks for sharing these insights!
