5 on Friday 29/11/24

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases a new Slaves to Darkness battletome for Age of Sigmar – GW is starting to get rolling with new battletomes for 4th edition Age of Sigmar. The next one is this fetching little book for the malevolent forces of the Slaves to Darkness:

I’m hopeful that this edition of AoS will continue the fantastic legacy of third edition. The Slaves to Darkness are an iconic army, and I’m excited to see what direction they’re taken in. I might even finish my ones, though some of the key pieces I was working on seem to have been removed from the book.

Themeborne releases a The Last of Us-themed edition of Escape the Dark –  As long-time readers will know, I really like Escape the Dark, particularly Escape the Dark Sector. Now, we’re seeing a licensed edition based on The Last of Us:

I’m not familiar with The Last of Us, though I understand it’s very, very popular. From what little I know, it does seem to be a nice match with this particular format of game. Escape the Dark is essentially a more elaborate Choose Your Own Adventure book. I feel that description undersells what is an interesting and suspenseful game…

Clanbook Baali released for Vampire: the Masquerade (V5) on Storyteller’s Vault – This caught my interest immediately! I loved these authors’ previous book about Clan Gangrel, so I’m all for reading up on this new title:

The Baali have never been among my favourite clans, but I said that about the Gangrel and loved the last book, so I’m totally open to changing my mind! I’ve asked for and been granted a review copy, so we’ll take a look in the next couple of weeks and see if this maintains the bard of quality set by the Gangrel book.

GMT Games releases Red Dust Rebellion – GMT Games’ COIN series of counterinsurgency-themed games is going offworld! Red Dust Rebellion is a sci-fi implementation of the system, and one I’ve been watching for some time:

This is a tempting release! Do I really need another Mars-based game, though? With two versions of Terraforming Mars and On Mars all in my collection, I worry that the red planet is overrepresented on my shelves! Nah, this is one I’ll be looking to pick up at some point. The sci-fi flavour might make it more accessible to some of my group, who can find GMT Games’ various offerings a little hard to swallow.

Edge releases their Arkham Horror roleplaying game – If I’m not sure about needing more Mars-based games, that goes all the more for Cthulhu-based RPGs… I’ve got Call of Cthulhu, Fate of Cthulhu, Trail of Cthulhu, and others. Do I need an offering from Edge?

Probably not. The tone looks to be more swashbuckly and action-focused, which is nice. I always get bemused when I see Edge. They’re kind of like the heated-up corpse of Fantasy Flight’s RPG division. It’s also funny to see the claim that “we create universes” on their website… Aren’t all of their titles licensed properties, with most being developed by the now-defunct RPG division of Fantasy Flight Games? Come on; try harder.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

The Worst Christmas Gift of All Time? @ Plastic Craic I mean… it’s not the worst gift.

deePRECONnaissance: a Dragon’s Horde of new Commander decks @ Beats and Skies Some interesting lists. None of them jump out at me as one I’m itching to use, but I do like seeing how different decks are put together, as I’m still learning how to really make a deck work.

Existential Road Tripping – Review: Electric State RPG @ Burn After Running I need to pick this up. I love the whole idea of it, the movie trailer has me pumped, and I love the art. This review just further whets the appetite!

Daily Commander: Gyome, Master Chef @ J.M. Casual Blog I’m still wanting to make a really good food deck. I might adapt the Hobbit deck, or I might just double down on making my Ygra deck really work. This commander seems a lot of fun, too.

Turnip Cults @ A Loft Full of Lead Moar Turnip! I’m always here for any and all Turnip28 content.

  1. Thanks for sharing my post! Yeah, I think those four decks are the least interesting of the 16 that you get from that Magic Online package. Fortunately this is balanced out by the final four – got next week’s post already queued up. There’s at least two there which I’m tempted to assemble.
