5 on Friday 06/12/24

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop The Battle of Edoras set for their Lord of the Rings Miniatures game – It feels a bit odd to look at a War of the Rohirrim boxed set with so few horses, doesn’t it?

Oh, sure, I know that not all Rohirrim are Riders of Rohan, but if I type Rohirrim into Google, most of the images that come up feature horses very prominently. It’s iconic, innit? Still, it’s a great little set. The miniatures are beautiful, even if they do have a notable lack of horses.

Gamelyn taking preorders for Tiny Epic Cthulhu – You know, for as long as they’ve been around and going strong, I’ve just never actually gotten around to playing any of the Tiny Epic games. The latest entry in the series is Tiny Epic Cthulhu:

I really do need to give one a go. I like that each entry in the series is quite different. I also love just how stuffed with little pieces these boxes are. Gamelyn continues to really milk a winning formula.

Mongoose releases Traveller: Merchant’s Edition – I do love the current Mongoose iteration of Traveller. The books are of consistently high quality and they just put out so much great content for it. So, what do you need if you want to try it out?

This is the cheap starter rules for the system. For just $1, you get a 70+ page rulebook with all you need to get started. From there, there’s a whole galaxy to explore and a huge amount of rules and background that you can bolt on as you want. This is a great entry point to a fantastic game.

Max Fitzgerald releases Kickstarter campaign for Turnip28: The Shattered Lance – Max Fitzgerald is excellent. I really love what he’s done to built up Turnip28. He’s talented, consistent, hard-working, and slightly strange. I’m only one of those things… Hey, new Kickstarter!

This campaign is stuffed full of cool, grimdark, strange miniatures for Turnip28. I especially love the big monster. The pledges aren’t cheap, but it’s definitely a campaign I’ll be backing.

Catthulhu releases Cats of Catthulhu 10th Anniversary Compendium – You know, even if I know something isn’t for me, I can still appreciate it. In the spirit, enter this 10th anniversary edition of Cats of Catthulhu:

At 220 pages, this includes both the core rules, and the content previously published in Nekonomikon, the Cat Herder’s Guide, and Worlds of Catthulhu. It’s really a single, definitive source for all of your Lovecraftian feline gaming needs!

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Grotmas Regiments of Renown: The Plastic Craic Review @ Plastic Craic I’ve somewhat taken my eye off the ball concerning AoS of late. I’m just not playing a lot of it and haven’t been able to paint in quite a while. These regiments of renown completely passed me by, but I do like the idea, and some of them sound pretty fun! This is a good writeup.

Commander decklist: Gavi’s Seconds @ Scent of a Gamer Jeskai! My first commander was a jeskai one! I’m not the biggest fan of cycling, but this deck seems more focused on card draw, generally, than on cycling, specifically.

A Victorian Antique Restored: Cthulhu By Gaslight Investigators’ Guide @ Refereeing and Reflection Cthulhu by Gaslight caught my attention a couple of weeks ago. This is a good review the definitely justifies my optimism!

Daily Commander: Daily Commander: Rilsa Rael, Kingpin @ J.M. Casual Blog This post grabbed my attention because I have recently ordered a copy of Rilsa to use in my Unpaid Ogretime deck. Given that I have the card sitting (or will, once it arrives) I thought it interesting to see how she’d work as the boss… Or, indeed, as the kingpin.

November 2024 Gaming @ Dude! Take Your Turn! Some good games in here! I love Scout. I love Terraforming Mars. I’ve had Merchant of Venus on the shelf for years unplayed. I need to remedy that… I’m not sure how I’ve managed never to have played Azul at this point.
