Magic Monday: Upcoming Northern Knights Commander Precon Event

Exciting news! Our local club, the Northern Knights are going to be hosting a Commander precon event for our members and other interested peeps who may wish to pop along, locally. Honestly, we’re not expecting much uptake from beyond the club, because we are pretty remote. Commander has seen a big uptake at club this year. In addition to myself, we’ve probably got around 15 players? Give or take a couple? For any game with any sort of buy-in, that’s really good for where we are!

At the time of writing, my list for the event is sitting at 11 players! That also includes my wife, who doesn’t often come to this sort of thing, so I’m delighted that she’s keen on this. She did come to our Ticket to Ride event, previously!

The event is scheduled for the 1st of February and our intent is to use precons, because some of our players are still getting their heads around the rules, and people’s collections are at very different levels. This means that precons should give a more even playing field for learning. I’d love to move to more open events in the future (and maybe a Jumpstart event?) but this feels like the right call at this time.

I’m really looking forward to the event. I know exactly what precon my wife will use; her buddy, Sidar Jabari of Zhalfir:

I am starting to wonder what precon I should use:

  • Necron Dynasties: Graveyard shenanigans! Honestly, I feel like this deck should be performing way better than it has been with me. It’s popped off for me, like, once? I just really seem to be bad with this deck.
  • Food and Fellowship: Fun! This deck is fun! It’s a delightful deck full of hobbits and food token generation. I really enjoy using this deck. It’s one of my wife’s favourites as well, though I know she won’t be using it for this event.
  • The Wise Mothman: This deck was ordered as a birthday gift. My birthday is in November, but it only got dispatched the other day. It looks a lot of fun. I’ll try to get a game or two in with it and see if I want to use this for the event. It’s one that, after the event, I’d love to upgrade.
  • Lorehold Legacies: This was actually one of the first two Commander decks that I picked up, but I haven’t actually played it. The first time I went to use it, someone else had brought the same deck, so I switched it out. The second time, we had a returning player at the table who liked artifact-based decks, so I handed it to him. I need to take a look and really get my head around how this one works. It’s so focused and seems a really interesting deck with pretty good removal for a precon.

I’ll get some games in this month and pick one to use for the event. At the moment, I’m probably leaning towards either Lorehold Legacies or The Wise Mothman, but I do like them Hobbitses…

  1. My LGS does a precon commander event once a month normally (and the timing never seems to work out for me!). Super good idea, especially as someone who pretty much exclusively plays unmodified precons anyway.

Also, fwiw, the Northern Nights are a professional cricket team here. 🙂

      1. Yeah, that deck unmodified has a pretty strong reputation and the commander seems pretty popular for custom builds too. In fact it seems like you’ve managed to pick up a few of the more notable decks released in the last couple years: Necrons and Hobbits must be up there in the fun/power stakes too.

      2. I’ve been told necrons are good, but they just haven’t worked for me at all.
The hobbits can pop off, though.
The orecon I’ve put the most work into upgrading is probably Zinnia.
