Now, let’s take a look at what sort of progress was made in September.
September Roundup: Painting
This has been an alright month for painting. I was never going to hit the sort of numbers I got in August, but I’ve had a lot of fun with what I’ve painted. First up was this lovely Burrows & Badgers Necromancer crew:

The prints turned out well and they were a lot of fun to paint. I could see myself returning to Goon Master for more STLs in the not-too-distant future.
I then shifted gears and tone to complete a set of Ashes and Dust for Malifaux:

I used these as my entry for our club’s most recent painting challenge, scoring a second-place finish.
I then returned to a more whimsical world with a second Burrows & Badgers crew. This time, I went for some Witch Hunters:

These were more Goon Master STLs, and I think I’m going to go and maybe do a Creator Spotlight review of them, having now printed and painted of their miniatures.
In terms of purchases, I bought some Khornate Daemons off a friend for a Legion of the First Prince list I’d like to build. In all, I bought 20 Bloodletters of Khorne and 6 Bloodcrushers of Khorne.
Here were the totals from the start of September:
- Purchased: 56
- Painted: 157
Our totals to be added for this month:
- Purchased: 26
- Painted: 23
And, through the power of addition, here are the totals for the year to date:
- Purchased: 82
- Painted: 180
I’m currently working on some Gloomspite wolves. I’ve got a third Burrows & Badgers crew sitting here as well, and a bnch of ideas about how to try and round off some projects; though I imagine several of these will go into next year.
September Roundup: Gaming
With Commander and Lorcana featuring more heavily in my rotation at the moment, and a goal to get more miniature games played, I’ve reduced this year’s target to 30 games. Up to the beginning of May, I had played the following games this year:
- Magic: the Gathering
- Disney Lorcana
- Warhammer: Age of Sigmar
- Apiary
- Architects of the West Kingdom
- 7 Wonders
- Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition
- Raiders of the North Sea
- Paranoia: The Uncooperative Board Game
- Unstable Unicorns
- Viscounts of the West Kingdom
- Wayfarers of the South Tigris
- Eclipse: Second Dawn for the Galaxy
- Clank! In! Space!
- Clank!
- Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress
- Tiny Towns
- Isle of Skye
- Risk
- River Valley Glassworks
- Shipwrights of the North Sea: Redux
- Necromunda
- Call of Cthulhu
- Century: Golem Edition
- How to Save a World
- Scout
- Dungeons & Dragons
- Arcane Academy
- Everdell
- Deep Sea Adventure
- A Fake Artist Goes to New York
- Adeptus Titanicus
This month, I’ve added one more game to the list:

I had so much fun with Mothership! I really enjoyed the scenario, and I have another session lined up. I would like to run it, too. It became our game of the month for September, with an accompanying review.
I got a couple of games of AoS in. I had intended to get the Flesh-Eater Courts or Ironjawz to the table, but I got lazy and stuff with the Troggoths for the first game. They’re a lot of fun. I love them. They’re also easy, though. They’re already packed, I know the rules very well, and they’re all painted. For the second game, I had intended to go Troggoths again, but did manage to make the effort to grab the Ironjawz for a mirror match against another player’s Ironjawz. Spoiler: Ironjawz won. Specifically, mine did.
Oh, I also got Root back to the table for the first time in aaaaages. First time this year, actually. I played the Woodland Alliance. They’re not my go-to, but they can be a lot of fun. I never really got going in this game, though. I made some poor decisions early on and was not able to really get things moving. Still, I managed second place, but this was largely due to getting a lot of good crafting cards.
September Roundup: Writing
I finished the write-ups of my summer reading, continued my Star Wars rewatch, and enjoyed Mothership, among other reviews. There were 7, in all:
- The book, Somebody Told Me, by Danny Wallace
- The novel, Six Steps to Salvation, by P.J. Murphy
- The graphic novel, Star Trek: Lower Decks, vol. 1
- The card game, Doomlings
- The 2008 Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie
- The Science! Commander precon deck
- The RPG, Mothership
And here were my other wordier, more thoughtful posts for September:
- Thoughts on the MTG card, Narset, Parter of Veils
- Some initial thoughts on the decks for our club’s latest Commander challenge
- Thinkin’ about a joke from the Lower Decks comics
- Thoughts on fostering a safe and positive gaming group
- Considering the intersection of Dr Strange and Mage: The Ascension, part 1
- Drafting a gaming club code of conduct
I’ve got part 2 of that Dr Strange post sitting waiting. I have a pair of Vampire: the Masquerade supplements that have been sitting, waiting for reviews for months. I will get to those! Beyond that, I’ve got less planned for this month than I have for a good while.
