5 on Friday 17/04/26

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop to release a new Iron Warriors Combat Patrol set for Warhammer 40,000 – Considering that I don’t actually play Warhammer 40,000 these days, I’m certainly finding myself tempted by a lot of 40K minis. These Iron Warriors are the latest temptations:

If we go back to one of my old wishlisting posts, I can’t help but notice that I’ve done a Nurgle army and I’ve grabbed what I need for GSC… the only army from this post that I’ve not grabbed are, indeed, the Iron Warriors. Geez, those wishlisting posts are dangerous…

Philip Reed releases Horizon, the Endless City – Horizon, the Endless City is a sprawling urban‑crawl toolkit; a dimension‑warped metropolis packed with neighbourhoods, NPCs, hooks, and strange pockets of wilderness. Philip Reed turns the city itself into an adventure engine you can drop into any campaign.

Nearly a hundred pages of neighbourhoods, locations, NPCs, entry paths, and GM tools make Horizon a ready‑to‑run sandbox where the streets never end, and the mysteries never stop. It’s fast to use, easy to slot in, and endlessly explorable.

Themeborne Ltd to release a second edition of Escape the Dark Castle – I didn’t play the first edition of Escape the Dark Castle, but I did play the sci-fi version, Escape the Dark Sector, so I do understand how this game works.

This second edition remains a roguelike while promising to cut down on some of the randomness. Not only is this a new edition, but it’s also a celebration of the 10th anniversary of the game. This is a lovely way to mark that milestone.

Free League to release City of My Nightmares, a supplement for Vaesen – The City of My Nightmares sourcebook pushes Vaesen into darker, more claustrophobic territory, treating urban folklore as a living pressure system where superstition, industrialisation, and the unseen grind against each other in tight, haunted streets. It’s a setting that leans into the tension of modernity brushing up against old powers that refuse to be forgotten.

New mysteries, creatures, and city‑bound frameworks give groups everything they need to run investigations where the vaesen feel closer, stranger, and harder to escape. This book makes the city itself the most dangerous entity of all.

Asmodee to release Zip! edition of Catan – Catan is a game that I still appreciate, but I don’t really reach for it any more. There’s no denying that it’s a classic, but it does feel somewhat dated. I can understand why it’s still popular, though. And it’s clearly still popular enough for new variants to be released.

This is a smaller edition of the game intended as a travel set. It’s a cool idea. I like some other travel editions of games, like Hive. Is there a market for this? I guess someone thinks so.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Turnip 28 and The IV Holy Ginger Legume parade @ Imperial Rebel Ork The usual grimy awesomeness that we’ve come to accept from this hobbyist and this particular game. The whole looks fantastic.

Why Not Everything Sucks! @ Azazel’s Bitz Box There are some really great recommendations here for some positive hobby-focused content.

What’s Winning? Gloomspite Gits Edition @ Plastic Craic An interesting breakdown of the current state of the Gloomspite Gitz. My takeaway from the post is that I think I need a lot more Squigs…

Brine & Origami @ Space-Biff I grabbed this game on holiday last year with the intention of playing it in a bar. In the end, we just played Scout again. I should break it out.

Ork Meganobz @ Lair of the Lagomorph These are so cool! How have I never done a Space Ork army? The Meganobz are such nice, solid, heavy-looking miniatures. Great job!
