If you were tuned into Games Workshop’s Autumn Preview, you probably remember the initial wave of excitement when GW revealed Necromunda: Roleplay. Blending tactical grid combat with classic d100 roleplaying mechanics in the Underhive.
However, if you’ve tried looking for the announcement on Warhammer Community recently, you might have noticed a glaring issue: it’s gone.
GW appears to have pulled the original article and scrubbed references to the boxed set from their roundup pages. So, what happened to Necromunda: Roleplay, and what does it mean for the game?

When Games Workshop completely removes an article rather than updating it with a delayed release window, the community naturally starts speculating. A few leading theories have surfaced across forums and tabletop blogs:
- Licensing & Partner Overlap: Unlike most Warhammer TTRPGs (which are produced by Cubicle 7), Necromunda: Roleplay was being produced directly in-house by GW as a hybrid board game/RPG. Some speculate there may have been a contractual overlap or licensing tangle regarding RPG publishing rights.
- Revealed Too Early: It’s no secret that GW’s production schedules can shift unexpectedly due to global supply logistics or printing delays. It’s possible the game was revealed months ahead of when it will actually be ready for pre-order, and GW chose to quiet the hype until the inventory is in warehouses.
- Correction or Redesign: Similar to past releases that faced minor last-minute adjustments, the box set, rules, or promotional materials may be undergoing a minor tweak before returning to the spotlight.
So… is the game dead?
Probably not.
The preview showcased finished plastic miniatures (including new Hive Scum and hero sculpts), printed rulebooks, custom dice, and play mats. Games Workshop rarely scraps products that have already progressed this deep into physical tooling and production.
Most likely, Necromunda: Roleplay is simply postponed. While the temporary “disappearing act” is frustrating for fans eager to dive back into Hive Primus, the game will almost certainly re-emerge once release dates and logistics are locked down.
If you ask me, the licensing issues are probably the culprit. Cubicle 7 holds the license to produce games based on the worlds of Warhammer and its understandable that they might see this offering as an infringement of those rights.
Are these issues insurmountable? No. But they are tangible. They do matter. And they will slow things down.
Ultimately, i’d say to keep your respirators handy. The game isn’t lost in the Ash Wastes; it’s just laying low downhive for a bit.
