Magic Monday: 5 Bloomburrow Commanders That Interest Me

Okay, so following on from looking at a selection of Doctor Who Commanders, it’s time to look at Bloomburrow. This was a truly excellent set, which I loved very much. The thing is, I love it so much that I already have all the precons… and an expanded Zinnia deck… and Flubs… and Baylen… and Ygra…

So, I’ll be skipping those commanders and focusing on others that I have not yet built. At some point, I also need to do writeups for Flubs and Ygra, I suppose.

5: Clement, the Worrywort

Colour Identity: Simic (G/U)

The Gist: Frogs you control tap for a green or a blue mana. In addition, whenever you cast a frog, you may return another creature you control to its owner’s hand.

Why it’s interesting: Clement turns bounce mechanics into an engine rather than a tempo loss. He gives all your Frogs mana-dork utility, and his bounce ability triggers on-cast, letting you re-trigger ETB (enters-the-battlefield) effects indefinitely. Pair him with cards like Peregrine Drake, Mulldrifter, Coiling Oracle, or bouncy Frog threats (Valley Floodcaller, Dreamdew Entrancer) for explosive ETB loops and pseudo-infinite mana chains.

4: Muerra, Trash Tactician

Colour Identity: Gruul (R/G)

The Gist: He adds red or green mana for each Raccoon you control. Whenever you spend 4 or more mana in your turn, gain 3 life. Whenever you spend 8 or more mana to cast spells in a turn, exile the top two cards of your library; you may play until the end of your next turn.

Why it’s interesting: Muerra scales off two things Gruul loves: wide board states and spending huge amounts of mana. She converts token-heavy or creature-heavy setups into double-digit mana pools, giving you built-in life cushion and impulsive card draw just for slamming your biggest spells every turn.

3: Helga, Skittish Seer

Colour Identity: Bant (G/W/U)

The Gist: Whenever you cast a creature spell with mana value 4 or greater, draw a card, gain 1 life, and put a +1/+1 counter on Helga. Tap her to add X mana of any one color, where X is her power.

Why it’s interesting: She is the ultimate “Big Dumb Creatures” engine. Unlike traditional mana dorks that become irrelevant late-game, Helga scales her mana generation based on how many big spells you’ve cast. She draws cards to refill your hand every time you slam down mid-to-high cost threats, making it incredibly easy to chain massive creatures turn after turn.

2. The Infamous Cruelclaw

Colour Identity: Rakdos (B/R)

The Gist: He has menace. Whenever Cruelclaw deals combat damage to a player, discard a card and reveal cards from the top of your library until you hit a nonland card. You may cast that card for free.

Why it’s interesting: Cruelclaw brings high-stakes, explosive variance to Rakdos. Combined with evasion, instant-speed top-deck manipulators (Vampiric Tutor, Sensei’s Divining Top, Imperial Seal), or heavy-hitting top-end spells (Blightsteel Colossus, Ulamog, Peer into the Abyss), you can swing on turn 3 and cheat out game-ending threats for the cost of discarding a single card.

1: Glarb, Calamity’s Augur

Colour Identity: Sultai (B/G/U)

The Gist: You may look at and play the top card of your library if it has mana value 4 or greater. Tap Glarb to Surveil 2.

Why it’s interesting: Glarb gives Sultai a top-deck play style that bypasses traditional land-ramp constraints. Because he allows playing spells and lands off the top (provided they cost 4+ mana) he actively rewards running massive mid-to-late game threats. His free Surveil 2 ability lets you filter away cheap reaction spells or dead draws to continuously chain high-impact cards directly off your library.
