5 on Friday 08/12/23

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases a new army box for the Flesh-Eater Courts – I love the concept of the Flesh-Eater Courts. I love that Games Workshop took what could have been some pretty uninteresting ghouls and actually gave them a bit of personality and some cool quirks. That’s always been something really present in their background, but not really reflected in the bulk of their models. The new update is going to change that!

This is a fantastic army set that contains most of the new minis, along with the books and cards. It looks to be a really fantastic set. Sadly, it’s not a set I’ll be grabbing, as my own FEC army doesn’t use the standard minis. I’m so excited for the refresh, though!

Heinrich D. Moore releases a Call of Cthulhu Guide to Carcosa –  I enjoyed finally getting to play Call of Cthulhu this year, after admiring the game and its supplements for some time. The official 7th edition supplements have been really excellent. There are also a number of really cool third-party supplements, such as this offering from Heinrich D. Moore:

A Carcosa-themed supplement is a cool idea. Many fantastic Cthulhu-esque stories take place in or around the sea. The mysteries of the sea, as once they were, are such fantastic fodder for the sort of Horror that Lovecraft embodied. The only thing that doesn’t quite fit here for me is the fact that it’s a solo campaign, but I imagine the material would still be quite useful.

Corvus Belli releases CodeOne Haqqislam Collection Pack – Corvus Belli makes exceedingly good miniatures, don’t they? The Infinity range is gorgeous. They’ve now started releasing collection packs for their CodeOne game, including this Haqqislam-themed offering:

CodeOne is a cut-down version of Infinity. I like the idea of being able to just grab everything you’re likely to need for a faction in one fell swoop, even if it does come with a hefty price tag. I should take a wee look at CodeOne and see if it’s more accessible than Infinity for new players. Might be a better way to get some games in!

Pelgrane Press releases Fearful Symmetries supplement for Trail of Cthulhu – Our second mythos-based supplement of the week, Fearful Symmetries is for the Gumshoe-based game, Trail of Cthulhu. This is a system based on facilitating investigative play, which is something I’ve previously written about at length.

Intended to be used alongside The Book of the New Jerusalem, this book helps the Keeper (GM) to build a campaign drawing on the folklore of England. The focus on and apparent celebration of the poetry of William Blake is also very thematically promising!

Warcradle releases Couronne Battlefleet for Dystopian Wars –  Dystopian Wars is an interesting one. I like the minis, and I’ve previously painted an Italian fleet for the game; though I’m not sure if they are still a thing in the current edition. I’m not so convinced by the rules. It feels a bit dry. The models are still very tempting, though…

Behold the might of the French fleet! This is a cool set with some nice ships. I love the flying ships in particular, and the carrier is particularly excellent.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

It’s Feasting Time: A Flesh-Eater Courts Battletome Review @ Plastic Craic – Plastic Craic continues to put out really good AoS content. I really enjoyed their FEC review. This is an army I am hoping to complete next year, so I’m really keen to see what works in order to adapt my plans for the army, now that they’re a very different force to what I had previously seen.

SPSFC Book Review: Reality Check (Dave McCreery) @ BookWyrm Knits I’m really delighted by this review. Dave is a childhood friend of mine, and I’m really happy to see him doing well. He’s long had a passion for writing, and it’s great that over the past few years he’s really been making it happen. Have a look at the review and, if it appeals, grab his book(s)!

They came from the woods! @ J’ai Un Planning Chargé Gorgeous Oldhammery goodness. These models are absolute classics, beautifully painted. Thanks for sharing!

Fantasy – Evil Clerics – Adepts 2 @ Double Down Dice I really like the Frostgrave Cultist miniatures from North Star. I painted a set myself this year. The author of this post has done a good job with the minis; they look great!

Top Three AOS Lists for Raccoon Rumble 2023: Age of Sigmar @ Woehammer I love it when a Woehammer top 3 list consists entirely of armies I like. It’s rare, but it’s a treat! I love the Brute-heavy approach of the Big Waaagh list. The Gitz list is quite different to anything I’ve fielded, too.

There have been a few posts since my last 5 on Friday:

Tomorrow, we’ll be looking at part 2 of the top 50 list. Beyond that, I don’t know what I’m doing this week. I’ve not been working on any miniatures since finishing my Stonehorn Beastriders. I’m not really sure what to move onto next.

Catch y’all soon!
