5 on Friday 22/03/24

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases Kroot boxed set for Warhammer 40,000 – The Kroot, as part of the Tau army, have long been neglected. They were one of the coolest parts of the original book, and they had a really fantastic White Dwarf army, but not much since. Now, GW are bringing them back!

I love that they’re using the Kroot to bring in the Tau book for the new edition. That’s fantastic. They are well-overdue for some love and I can’t wait to see lots of Kroot-heavy armies make it to the table. I know we have one Kroot-obsessive at our local club who is delighted.

Days of Wonder releases Ticket to Ride: Paris –  This is the latest of the smaller, city-themed versions of Ticket to Ride. They’re on little boards and take less time to play, but are still nice gaming experiences.

I recently played the New York edition for the first time and I had a lot of fun. Did I do well? No! Does it matter? I tell myself, no! I will likely pick up one of the city games at some point, though I’m not yet sure which.

Cubicle 7 releases Lustria supplement for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay – I actually looked at this about a year ago when the digital version was released. The physical version is only now making it into retail channels. Cubicle 7 continues the rolling out of more books for this latest, fantastic edition of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. This time, we’re taking a trip to the deep, forested lands of Lustria:

This book features a ton of Lustria-focused content, including the history of the continent and material on the major factions. These include the Lizardmen, the Norse, the High and Dark Elves, Piratical Vampires, and the Skaven of Clan Pestilens. Add to this, lots of cool, new player options and you’ve got a stew goin’!

Stonemaier Games releases Wyrmspan – I wasn’t the biggest fan of Wingspan, though I’m also not sure I gave it enough of a chance. I based my initial impression on a single game with a slightly chaotic group. It might be worth a revisit at some point. Now, Stonemaier are releasing a spinoff. A spinoff… with dragons:

For fans of Wingspan, Wyrmspan has the same game at its core, but with some twists to make it its own thing. I like it when these spinoff games are more than just a reskin and actually have some thought put into them. Worth a second look, I reckon!

Atomic Mass Games releases Hondo and his close business associates for Shatterpoint – More amazing miniatures for Shatterpoint? Of course. This time, we’re looking at the greatest pirate/respectable independent trader in the known (and unknown) galaxy, Hondo Ohnaka:

This isn’t the most exciting set we’ve had recently, and it suffers from a tragic lack of Ewoks, but I still really like it. Mainly, this is down to Hondo himself. The miniature captures him so well and I just want to hang with him.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

This Week in Hobby — 2.20.24 @ Torg’s Blog – Inquisitor! Fantastic! I love the inquisitor range and these look great. Good job! I’ve been talking to some others about maybe giving Inquisitor another go. I hope I can drum up a wee bit of interest.

Skabbik’s Plaguepack and Paths of Prophecy @ Can You Roll a Crit? Have been trying to read up on Skabbik and his buddies as, after painting my set, I’m using them in a little league at our local club. In hindsight, it might have been worth picking a crew that I’ve used before, but nah! Let’s go for it!

Best 3 Games with…Hidden Movement! @ The Players’ Aid Some cool suggestions here. I always really liked Specter Ops as my hidden movement game of choice. I’d had Fury of Dracula for a while as well, but I haven’t gotten it to the table yet. Of the games on this list, I think Sniper Elite probably appeals to me the most.

DA FINAL FLING: Competing with Bonesplitterz at Summer Smash ’24 @ Plastic Craic Bravo! It’s great to see the Bonesplitterz getting a worthy sendoff. I’m gutted that they are seemingly going to be shelved by GW. I’ve got a bunch of kits sitting here to make an army, but I just can’t bring myself to do it with the prospect of them being immediately invalidated. It’s bad enough that there are rumours of Clan Pestilens being removed after I’ve just painted 60 Plague Monks…

Raziel from The Legacy of Kain/Soul Reaver @ DarthTom’s Gaming Amazing. This is great, and Raziel is such a great character whom I loved as a kid. Great job with the painting, and I like the attached guide, too.

There have been a few posts since my last 5 on Friday:

A decent week in hobby. I have finished 21 miniatures and have another 21 nearly done, and then yet another 21 that are a bit further away. I’ve started some more Gargants, too. We’re on the right path!

No new purchases, but I’ve printed another 10 infantry for the Chaos Dwarfs. I’ll talk about them at the start of April as we look ahead to the next stage of Woehammer’s slow grow challenge.

Painting, purchasing, and printing totals so far this year:

  • Purchased: 29 minis
  • Printed: 57 minis
  • Painted: 131 minis
