Beyond The Dungeon, Part 3: Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Dungeons & Dragons, and particularly the current fifth edition, is the undisputed champion of the RPG world.  It’s what most people think of when they think about roleplaying games, and its usually people’s first introduction to the genre.  Not for all of us, of course…  And, you know what, it’s a good game.  It’s good for what it is.  The thing is, for a lot of players, it seems that D&D is all there is.  You see so many people looking to adjust the game to fit a particular theme, setting, or style, where there are other games available that will work just as well, if not better.  Today, we’re taking a look at roleplaying in The Old World; that of classic Warhammer.

WFRP, as it is commonly known, is a well-established property. It’s obviously based upon the pre-existing setting of Warhammer. It actually played a big part in fleshing out that world. The RPG has been around for a fair while, with the first edition being originally published in 1986. I had this edition, as it was in place for a long time, until the release of second edition in 2005.

2018 saw the release of the current, fourth edition. It was a very successful launch and the new edition seems popular and polished. As this edition grows and develops into very thorough and well-developed setting, now seems as good a time as any to dive in. What, then, does this game have to offer?

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay immerses players into a (indeed, the) grim and perilous world of dark fantasy, where chaos reigns, and heroes are forged in the crucible of war and despair. WFRP captures the gritty and atmospheric setting of the Warhammer Fantasy universe, inviting players to explore its rich lore, face its myriad dangers, and carve out their own destinies amidst the horrors of the Old World.

That grim and perilous atmosphere is at the core of WFRP, inspired by the dark fantasy setting of the Warhammer Fantasy universe. The Old World is a place of relentless strife, where corruption, heresy, and malevolent forces lurk around every corner. From the decaying cities of the Empire to the haunted forests of the Drakwald, WFRP paints a vivid and immersive portrait of a world on the brink of collapse, where heroes must confront their own mortality and face the darkness within.

Unlike traditional high fantasy settings, WFRP embraces a low fantasy realism that emphasises the gritty and visceral aspects of medieval life. Magic is rare and dangerous, wielded by sorcerers who risk corruption and damnation with every spell. Combat is brutal and unforgiving, where even the mightiest warriors can fall to a well-placed blow. Disease, famine, and superstition are ever-present threats, adding to the sense of peril and uncertainty that permeates the world of WFRP.

WFRP features a unique career-based character progression system that allows players to create characters from a variety of backgrounds and professions. I love this approach. It’s my favourite part of the game. Whether they’re playing as noble knights, cunning rogues, zealous priests, or humble peasants, players can choose from a wide array of careers that reflect the social and cultural diversity of the Old World. There are a lot of these! As characters progress through their careers, they gain new abilities, skills, and talents, shaping their identities and defining their roles within the group.

I know I keep harping on about the setting, but one of the most compelling aspects of WFRP really is its deep and immersive lore, rooted in the rich tapestry of the incredibly well-established and developed Warhammer setting. From the sprawling cities of Altdorf and Middenheim to the twisted forests of Athel Loren and the desolate Chaos Wastes, the Old World is teeming with history, mythology, and intrigue. God, I love the intrigue. There are such delicious political aspects to this world! Players can explore ancient ruins, uncover dark secrets, and confront legendary creatures as they journey across the land, immersing themselves in epic adventure and perilous danger.

Central to the conflict in WFRP is the eternal struggle between order and chaos, embodied by the forces of the Empire and its allies, and the insidious machinations of Chaos. The Ruinous Powers, led by the malevolent Chaos Gods, seek to corrupt and destroy all that is good in the world, spreading madness, mutation, and despair in their wake. Players must confront the temptations of chaos, resist its corrupting influence, and stand firm against the tide of darkness that threatens to engulf the Old World.

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay is an absolute classic of the genre. It stands as a dark and immersive tabletop roleplaying game that captures the grim and perilous atmosphere of the Warhammer Fantasy universe. With its gritty realism, career-based character progression, deep lore and setting, and eternal conflict between order and chaos, WFRP offers players a thrilling gaming experience that puts theme front and centre as it explores the darker aspects of human nature and the eternal struggle for survival in a world consumed by darkness. Ultimately, one could argue that this game is very similar to Dungeons & Dragons, but WFRP is far less of a generic fantasy experience and that job/class and progression system works incredibly well. Whether you’re a veteran of the Old World or a newcomer to the setting of Warhammer Fantasy, I heartily recommend WFRP, especially now that the fourth edition range seems to be really getting fleshed out.
